“Dai-chan, can’t you stay?” Chinen cried, holding on to Daiki’s arm as the boy closed his suitcase shut. “I don’t want to be all alone for Christmas!”
Daiki lifted the heavy suitcase off the bed and wheeled it to the door of their hotel room. “I’m sorry Chii, but my family already planned this trip three months ago,” he sighed. Chinen merely tightened his grip on his friend’s arm, reluctant to let go.
Hey! Say! JUMP were staying in a hotel in Hokkaido to shoot their latest PV, but because that day was Christmas, plans were pushed back a little and they were allowed five days off to celebrate the holiday with their families. Daiki was going to spend his Christmas with his relatives at some far away country, and the rest of JUMP had similar plans as well.
Chinen slowly loosened his hold on Daiki’s arm, sighing. His parents were too busy to spend the holiday with him, so he was stuck here all alone. Why did Daiki have to go?
“Oh come on, Chii,” Daiki called. He placed his suitcase by the door and turned to face his friend, his arms wide open for a hug. Chinen smiled sadly, before lunging into Daiki’s arms and hugging the other boy tightly.
“I’ll call you everyday, okay?” he whispered into Chinen’s hair, hugging him back. The eighteen year old nodded and mumbled, “Promise?”
“I promise,” he smiled, and they soon pulled away from each other. Daiki ruffled Chinen’s hair before opening the door and rolling the luggage out of the room.
“Dai-chan! Hey Dai-chan, wait! Don’t you want to say goodbye to your best friend?” a voice yelled, and the two of them turned around to see Yamada Ryosuke running down the hallway towards them.
“Ryo-chan!” Daiki exclaimed. He released his hold on his luggage right before Yamada attacked him with a hug. “Aren’t you going away too?”
Yamada pulled away from Daiki, a huge grin on his face. “Eh, my trip got cancelled. Dad’s too busy with work to make time for us so I’m just staying here.” He shrugged nonchalantly, but both Chinen and Daiki saw through his facade.
“I’m sorry to hear that,” the twenty year old replied sympathetically, patting Yamada on the shoulder. “But you won’t be alone, right? Chii’s staying too.”
Chinen gulped. He was going to stay at the hotel alone.. with Yamada?
“You are?” Yamada grinned, turning around to face him. “Great! I thought I was going to be alone.”
Chinen felt his cheeks burn as Yamada stared at him with joyful eyes. (Not to mention how dashing he looked in his red jacket and black jeans. But Chinen wasn’t staring at those. Oh no.)
“And everyone knows how Yamada Ryosuke can’t be alone for too long without someone telling him how handsome he is,” Daiki commented from the sidelines, earning a punch on the shoulder from his friend.
Chinen merely nodded, his heart thumping faster as Yamada continued to smile at him.
Daiki laughed as he tucked a stray strand of hair behind his ear. “Well, there you go. I’ve got to leave now anyway. Merry Christmas!”
“Merry Christmas, Dai-chan,” Chinen and Yamada chorused, as they waved him goodbye.
“Call me everyday!” Yamada shouted as Daiki grabbed his suitcase and rolled it down the hallway.
The both of them watched as their older friend went away until they couldn’t see him anymore. As soon as the little speck that is Daiki disappeared from the last step of the staircase, Yamada turned to Chinen and grinned. “What should we do now?”
“What do you mean, we?” Chinen asked in surprise, inwardly smacking himself for being unable to tone down his blushing.
Yamada stared at him weirdly. “You know, we. Me and you. Us.” Chinen heard his heart break when he realised that Yamada probably meant ‘us’ in a friendly way.
“I’m busy,” the shorter boy replied curtly. He was about to retreat to his own hotel room when Yamada grabbed his arm and pulled him back.
“Yeah? With what?” he retorted, and Chinen secretly cursed him for being so strong that he couldn’t free himself from the death grip on his arm.
“Something,” he mumbled. “Can you let go of me?”
Yamada released Chinen’s arm but stayed rooted to his spot.
Chinen raised an eyebrow. “Why are you still here?”
“Why are you acting all weird?” Yamada asked, ignoring the other’s question. Yamada didn’t have that cheerful tone in his voice anymore. It was all serious and it made Chinen feel even more nervous than before.
“I don’t have time for this,” Chinen said, immediately unlocking his door and entering the room, leaving his bandmate behind.
Chinen jumped a little when he heard Yamada’s voice behind him. “What’s wrong with you?”
“Me? You’re the one sneaking up on people!” He avoided Yamada’s eyes and looked outside the window, where a wide landscape of snow and trees welcomed him and served as a temporary distraction.
‘It sure is snowy today,’ Chinen observed as more snowflakes descended from the sky.
“Don’t ignore me.” A sharp voice cut into his thoughts. Chinen sighed.
“There’s nothing wrong with me, okay? Why do you even think that?” Really. There was nothing wrong. Maybe he liked Yamada a little, and the older was always making him feel weird when he’s around, but aside from that there was nothing wrong with him.
Really.
Yamada sighed and sat on Daiki’s bed. He locked his brown eyes onto Chinen, who was fidgeting under his intense gaze.
“Stop staring,” Chinen blurted after a few seconds. Did he have to stare? The eighteen year old felt self-conscious as Yamada kept on scrutinising him.
And this boy still wondered why Chinen kept avoiding him? He mentally shook his head.
“You used to hang out with me all the time,” Yamada started. “We’d talk for hours and just laugh about everything and now you’re totally ignoring me and running away at the sight of me.” He looked down at his open palms and muttered, “Did I do something wrong?”
“N-No!” Chinen cried, hopping off his bed to squat in front of Yamada. “It’s totally not your fault! You did nothing wrong, don’t worry!”
“Then why..?” Yamada trailed off, as he stared into Chinen’s eyes.
The shorter boy immediately looked away, afraid he’d get lost in the other’s gaze. “I.. it’s nothing, okay?”
Yamada nodded, though his eyes were still downcast. Chinen gulped at the sad look on Yamada's face and quickly thought of something to say.“If you want, we can hang out now.”
“Really?” Yamada beamed, and Chinen’s heartbeat started speeding up at the sight of it.
“Then, let’s go now!”
Wha━?
Yamada grabbed Chinen’s hands and pulled him up to his feet, before dragging him out the door, down the hallway and three flights of stairs and finally out of the main lobby. Chinen couldn’t even comprehend what was happening and before he knew it, he was already out of the hotel and standing in the snow with nothing but his pyjamas on.
“Yamada!” he screamed in annoyance. The cold winter breeze bit at his skin and he was freezing after five seconds of being out in the open. He shivered slightly as he looked around for Yamada, who had run away from him after leaving him in the snow.
Chinen began to trudge back to the hotel, but right before he could take another step-
“Ouch!”
-something wet and fluffy hit him in the back of his neck. Chinen hissed as the coldness of the snowball stung him and whipped around to see where it came from, only to see a smirking Yamada behind him with an armful of snowballs ready to be thrown.
“Yamada Ryosuke, you idiot!” Chinen yelled. He yelped as another snowball was launched at him and he quickly ducked to avoid it. “You didn’t tell me we were going to have a snowball fight!”
“We’re going to have a snowball fight!” Yamada yelled back, and he laughed loudly as he began to take another snowball into his hand.
Chinen ran away as fast as he could and hid behind a few benches, trying to shield himself from the barrage of snowball attacks. He grabbed a pile of snow and mashed it up to form a snowball. He stayed hidden behind the bench, waiting for the perfect moment to strike, and just when Yamada had his back turned on him..
..he leapt up from his hiding spot and pelted the snowball at him, enjoying the look of horror on Yamada's face as the snow got into his hair.
"Come back here!" Yamada yelled, immediately dropping his supply of snowballs and running towards Chinen.
Chinen shrieked with laughter as he dashed away from his friend, covering his head with his hands as Yamada threw makeshift snowballs at him.
"Is that the best you can do, Yamada?" Chinen shouted as he skirted a fallen snow-covered branch on the ground.
Unfortunately for Yamada, who was hot on his heels, he didn't see the stray branch and tripped over it. In his haste he grabbed the back of Chinen's pyjama top and pulled him down with him, and they tumbled onto the snow together.
The both of them laughed, their cheeks flushed pink from the running.
“Chinen,” Yamada whispered, a gleeful smile playing on his lips and a dancing spark in his eyes.
Chinen stared into Yamada’s eyes, transfixed by the flame swirling about in his irises. He tried to say something, but nothing came out of his mouth. Yamada chuckled at how cute Chinen looked, before brushing away a few strands of hair away from the boy’s face.
“We should probably go back inside.” As much as Chinen wanted to remain in that position forever, he couldn’t think straight with Yamada so close to him like that. The taller boy stood up and brushed his pants rid of snow, before offering his hand to Chinen to help him up.
“It’s moments like this that I miss,” Yamada said as they began to walk back to the main lobby. “When we’d play together without a care in the world.”
Chinen nodded, unsure of what to say. He shivered a little once the heat from running earlier had worn off, and it didn’t escape Yamada’s notice.
“You’re cold,” he observed, stopping in his tracks.
Chinen sneezed. “Yeah well, you didn’t exactly give me enough time to change into something warmer.” He couldn’t stop shaking now, and rubbing his arms with his hands wasn’t really helping much.
“Sorry.” Yamada smiled, before taking off his jacket and draping it across Chinen’s shoulders. He slung an arm around the small boy and whispered into his ear, “Better?”
Chinen’s heart started to accelerate when he felt Yamada’s hot breath by his ear. Blushing profusely, he nodded, wrapping the jacket around him tighter.
The walk back from then on was awkward but comfortable, with Chinen snuggled into the jacket and enveloped in Yamada’s arms. It was hard to walk, sure; but he sure as hell didn’t want this to end.
As soon as they got back to their floor on the hotel, Yamada led Chinen to his shared room with Yuto. “Just leave the jacket on the bed,” he stated as he went into the bathroom.
Chinen reluctantly removed the article of clothing from his body, taking as much time as possible so that he could continue to smell Yamada’s scent ━ cologne and a hint of strawberries.
Just as he was about to leave the room, Yamada stepped out of the bathroom, topless.
Chinen Yuri swore he could’ve died happy right then and there. The sight of Yamada’s torso was enough to make him go crazy.
“You’re going to leave now?” Yamada asked, ruffling his wet hair with a towel. Chinen gulped and nodded, his voice box failing him for the umpteenth time that day.
“Aren’t you going to give me a proper goodbye, then?” Yamada discarded the towel on the bed behind him, his eyes fixed solely on the gyoza lover by the doorway.
“What?” Chinen was confused by what the other boy meant. Proper goodbye?
Yamada grinned. “Look up.”
Chinen furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, but did so anyway. “It’s a-” And there it was. Right above him was a mistletoe hanging from the top of the doorway.
“A mistletoe,” Yamada finished, and Chinen jolted when he realised how close Yamada was to him. He bent down to the smaller boy’s ear and whispered, “Are you going to give me a proper goodbye now?”
Yamada didn’t give Chinen any moment to respond. He wrapped an arm around his friend’s waist and pulled him closer to kiss him in a way he had never been kissed before.
..
They didn’t stop until a few minutes later, when they parted for air.
“I’m guessing you aren’t going to say goodbye now, are you?” Yamada smirked. Chinen chuckled as he brought his lover closer for another kiss.
“Daiki! Daiki, oh Daiki thank goodness you answered!” Chinen cried into the phone with delight as he bounced on his bed.
“Did something happen?” Daiki asked, chuckling.
“Yama-chan- He- I- We- You know.. Yeah. That’s it.”
“..um, yeah. Did you guys kiss?”
“...”
“So I was right.”
“How’d you know?” Chinen whined. Daiki had just ruined the fun.
Daiki laughed. “Yamada told me. He reacted the same way you did.”
“He did?” Chinen echoed, a smile creeping onto his lips.
“Yeah he did. So..”
“Hm?”
“Tell me everything.”
Chinen grinned and proceeded to tell Daiki just that: everything. From the talk in their room to the snowball fight to the Yamada-smelling jacket and the mistletoe.
And when Yamada casually strolled into his room and slid into his bed to lie next to him and hug him from behind, well..
Chinen couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas.
A/N: I'm .. just going to write myself a lot of Ariyama now.
