How to make a Fruit Fly trap

This fruit fly trap is fabulous and if you have a problem with fruit flies try it out. Some people call for a container with a lid on it, but I prefer the "open air" container because frankly I like the smell of apple vinegar. But if you don't, you can cover the jar/container with a layer of plastic wrap and punch 5 or 6 small holes in it with a toothpick.

Last year, living in this apartment we had an infestation of fruit flies. I kept the kitchen pretty clean too, it just seemed like it was NEVER good enough. So, I made a fruit fly trap with the following ingredients. There are like 30 dead fruit flies and I don't see any in my kitchen. They will come back of course, they always do. But the flies have a shelf-life of only one-week so if I keep killing them off, it should be much better.

Here's the delightful killing recipe:

One small disposable plastic cottage cheese bowl
1 drop of liquid dish soap (to make it so the flies can't LEAVE the liquid)
1/4 cup Apple cider vinegar (yay, I can finally use up that vinegar!)
1/2 cup water (to dilute the mixture)
small, tempting food particles (preferably bananas though anything will do)
Place one bowl in every area where fruit flies are prevalent.
Change solution once a week or as needed.
