A/N: Written for leochi's 50 kids' table with the prompt "that's a new smell."
"Tea, Ginny?"
"No more for me, thanks," said Ginny pushing her cup away. "I must be going soon, it's almost time for dinner. I'll get Lily and we'll be on our way."
Ginny pushed her chair away from the table and grabbed her jacket as Hermione Levitated the cups and plates to the sink.
Hermione cocked her head to the side. "Come to think of it, Lily and Hugo have been rather quiet..."
"Uh oh. That's never a good sign," said Ginny. They looked at each other in alarm before they hurried to the other room.
To their surprise, they came upon the sight of Hugo happily dumping green sludge all over the floor from a small goblet. Lily was on her hands and knees, drawing shapes and practising her numbers in the mixture. There was a rancid odor coming from the the green sludge as it happily ate away the carpet.
Hermione sighed, looking at the mess in front of them.
"Well, that's a new smell," Ginny chimed, her nose wrinkled in distaste. "Did you give them dragon dung to play with?"
"Not unless there was any in the Beginner's Potions Kit Luna gave Hugo last Christmas," responded Hermione.
Ginny picked Lily up, careful to avoid the little girl's soiled hands and knees. There were holes in her tights from where the potion eroded through.
"Mummy, look! I wrote my name!" Lily pointed cheerfully to the indecipherable scribblings she made in the sludge.
"Yes you did, sweetheart," Ginny said, making sure to give the mess a measured glance. "Are your hands all right?"
"Yup!" said Lily, nodding vigorously.
Hermione examined the potion mess. "Looks like the potion is eating away at everything except for skin."
"Looks like Luna's gift was a success," Ginny remarked.
Hermione looked at the miniature cauldron on the floor, bubbling with a noxious purple mixture. The green sludge was making its way to where the cauldron resting on the carpet. "If by success, you mean 'mess,' I must agree with you."
Hugo looked up at his mother with glee. His hands were sullied with the concoction he made with Lily. There was a gap in the front of his mouth from a missing tooth. "Mummy, Lily and I made a potion!"
Ginny laughed as she carried Lily away. "Promise me you'll keep everything the same until Ron gets back. Dinner can wait, I need to see his reaction."
Hermione smiled, picking Hugo up from the green puddle on the floor. "I never liked the carpet that much, anyway. Molly helped us pick it out."
