A/N: Written from the prompt "serpentine" for my rarepair_shorts Hermione/Fleur table.

"Do you want to go to the beach?" Fleur asks me, her blue eyes steady. She holds my gaze, almost a challenge.

I nod. Anything to get out of this cottage, the stink of death and despair holding on, lingering.

The wind whips her hair around her face, the blonde strands I long to touch, to make my own.

She lays her head in my lap and I cradle her neck; the wispy hairs curl against the nape, serpentine around my fingers.

"Isn't this nice?" Fleur says, as she purrs contentedly at my touch. It feels so good to be in the company of another woman, after so many long weeks in a tent with Harry and Ron.

It is nice. I don't want to go back, don't want to hunt Horcruxes anymore. I just want to stay here on the beach, with Fleur. I want to keep her, hold her in my grasp, terrified she'll slip away like the sands of the beach carried by the wind. I just want to hold onto this moment, to put it in my pocket and keep it forever, so I know I'll never forget.
