“I have no idea how these got here,” Haruhi said, examining the flowers. “The florist insisted that you ordered them. But I know Tamaki told you- “ she stared at the ceiling, brought a thoughtful index finger to tap her lower lip “-that he wanted white roses for the centerpieces.”

When she looked back at him, inquisitively, Kyouya looked at her in return. At her big brown eyes, her lithe figure, the expert cut of her new dress. Tamaki loved her eyes, her figure. Tamaki picked the dress out for her. Tamaki. Kyouya didn’t hate Haruhi for any of this. Liked her, in fact.

“The florist made an error,” Kyouya replied “And will lose his job for it, I assure you.”

“That’s not necessary.”

“If you think so.”

Haruhi looked at him carefully, now. She rested her elbow on the table, her chin in her hand, and turned her eyes to the flowers.

“Where’s Tamaki?” he asked.

Her face contorted into a grimace. Kyouya felt a twinge of guilt. It was never his intention to disturb Haruhi. “In the bathroom. Hyperventillating.”

“Why?”

“The flowers. He thinks it’s some sort of omen or something.”

Kyouya sighed too, now. “He’s being ridiculous. The wedding’s still just less than forty-eight hours away; we’ll fix this is no time.”

“Kyouya!”

Kyouya and Haruhi both turned their heads to the corner of the reception hall. Haruhi sighed again. Both could hear the tears in Tamaki’s voice.

“Yes?”

Tamaki fell at his knees. “Please… the fate of my wedding is at stake! No, not just my wedding - my marriage!”

Haruhi rolled her eyes. Kyouya happened to know that she had wanted to elope.

“-and Haruhi will stop loving me at our fifth year anniversary, when I kill her goldfish by accident, and Ranka-san will tell her she needs to leave me and one day I’ll come home and she’ll have left me a note - Tamaki - I’ve joined Renge in France for a short vacation - but months later she still won’t be back - and they’ll - they’ll - oh, Kyouya!”

“What are Renge and I doing in France?”

“In the name of all goodness, in the name of love, for Venus and Eros-“

“Tamaki,” Haruhi cut in. He tended to babble when he was upset. Kyouya knew it well himself.

Tamaki took a deep breath, as though brevity was going to take all he had. “Please fix this!”

Kyouya looked at the white chrysanthemums on the table. He looked at Tamaki’s blue eyes, at his straight nose, at his tussled hair, his parted lips. His beauty; his rich voice and vivid gestures. His grace. He thought of his bravery, his foolishness, his good humor, his light. He thought of himself, and all that he had become thanks to the man before him.

For the last time, Kyouya wanted badly to kiss his best friend hard on the lips.

“Of course I will. You didn’t even have to ask, you idiot.”

a/n: According to my google-fu/limited cultural knowledge, white chrysanthemums are something you put on the grave of a loved one in Japan.
