Monster:
1. He wakes up from a nightmare late one night and calls out for his mom before remembering she's gone. Before remembering that she has been for about 27 years. He curls his legs up to his chest feeling like a little kid. Feeling so small and insignificant. Looking back he doesn't think he's ever felt that small. He feels a drop of water on his face. A leak he thinks. These damn motels always have them. More and more start to fall and he realizes they're tears. He's never once felt responsible for his mother's death. She was always the one battling the monsters that hid in the dark. Never once did it cross his mind that maybe he had to protect her too.
2. It’s an early Monday morning when Emma remarks that she couldn’t sleep last night because of the monster under her bed. It takes all of Dean’s will power to wait until she walks out the front door before rushing to her bedroom, shotgun in hand and the fiercest expression on his face.
“Not my family. Not again.”
3. He always hears parents remarking how easy it is for children because their only problems are the monsters under their beds. Dean sometimes scowls when he hears that because he’s nearing 40 and all he’s ever had to deal with are the monsters under his bed.
4. He knows what the difference between him and Max was. It was a rage and hatred that Sam sometimes felt was justified considering what his parents actually did. (He had hated his father for less) These days, though. When he looks at the mirror and sees this monster looking back he can hardly see the difference.
5. When Castiel first appeared to him he thought he was a monster or a demon and when he says those words, An Angel of the lord he thinks he must be both. But, now while driving down this never ending patch of road he can hear his silent breathing from the back seat and he looks at the rearview mirror and sees he’s fallen asleep on Sammy’s shoulder and he wonders how he could’ve ever thought that.
And if he drives slower to prevent him from waking up for as long as he can he doesn’t tell anyone.
Family
1. They’re on a mission regarding several disappearances in a nearby town when Dean introduces him as Cas Winchester. He spends weeks thinking about it too long and too hard before he finally asks Dean about it. “It just felt right” and he shrugs and leaves it at that.
2. He honestly wonders how Lucifer could think so badly of these humans. He’s always loved his brothers but sometimes he looks at Dean and Sam and at what they’ve sacrificed for each other and sees that though they make mistakes sometimes they have a great capacity to love. In heaven they even have rules for loving.
3. A week after they kill Lucifer Castiel wakes up to Dean watching Pokemon. He stands there as Dean explains with cereal dribbling out of his mouth. “What? Charizard is badass.”
Castiel prefers Mew.
