This week marks my first full week at my new job. It's been an adjustment working on a 9-5pm schedule and also commuting downtown which takes about 45 minutes but for the most part things have been going well. Everyone is super nice but our VP is pretty strict and the way she talks sometimes comes off as abrasive but I know she cares about me and really respects what I bring to the table. Our office space is also really gorgeous and I've been enjoying the free unlimited coffee. On Fridays which we call 'carb day' our office receives a ton of doughnuts, croissants, bagels and etc delivered so everyone eats carbs haha. I've also been finding it difficult to sit at my desk for so many hours a day because I've been so used to walking around, climbing stairs, running and doing physical work like breaking up fights and defending clients so that's been an adjustment but since I'm new I wanted to make a good impression so I tried not to leave my desk too much but I just don't enjoy sitting for most of the day. I've also been getting pretty bad headaches because I'm not used to the bright lightening in the office and staring at a computer all day, plus I have dual screens so basically I'm staring at two bright screens and super bright lights in the office for most of my day which has been strenuous on my eyes.
Tomorrow I'm having a meeting with management which I'm nervous about and not sure what to expect. The company hired me as an administrative coordinator but since I've been there I haven't been doing any admin work because they also hired another girl for the same role. So somehow I got tossed into filling in the vacant position for media and marketing. I honestly have no idea what I'm doing but apparently what I've been doing has been enough for a discussion about officially moving out of the admin role and salary into the media and marketing one. I figure it'll be some type of negotiation as to what I expect to be compensated and what responsibilities they officially want to deputize me into so both exciting and nerve wrecking but either way I'm still getting paid more than my previous job and I'm in a much better work environment so I'm already happy lol.
I did however encounter my first negative experience with a client. I'm in charge of managing the Thought Leader of the Year nomination submissions and on my first day this guy emailed the VP saying he nominated himself and submitted the application so she forwarded it to me and when I looked for the email submission I couldn't find it. So I let him know politely that I haven't received it and if he would still like to be eligible for the award he needs to resubmit his application. His response was really nasty and wrote to me saying "my time can not be replaced" and that he didn't save his work. I responded notifying him that I reached out to our IT specialist who will make sure all the submissions from our website and the previous employee formerly in charge of it to be sent to me instead. Then he emailed my VP saying "Kristen's replacement Tracy is new, therefore I suspect she is unable to locate my application or find a solution to my problem" then later that day I logged into my LinkedIn account and I saw that he had visited my profile 8 times in the last day of when he was sending me those rude emails. Well the IT guy quickly responded to my email and fixed the problem so I did end up receiving his pompous submission the next day and then confirmed with him that I received his application. Later on I forwarded the emails to my boss (partner of the company, wife to the CEO) and she felt terrible that someone treated me that way and said she would not invite him to future events and when I got in touch with the judges to discuss the Thought Leader of the Year award I let them know he was a pain to deal with during the submission process, karma's a bitch so don't be mean to people!
This weekend Murray the bichon spaniel mix that used to board with me pretty frequently is back! He was my regular client but ever since his owners moved back in with their parents, they became his built in dog sitter so I haven't seen him in a long time! It's been great having him back and he's playmate for Charlie for a few days. Now with my new job I'm gone during the day and working the same times as Lawrence whereas before I would work some days and some nights and the weekends which meant that Lawrence would be home when I'm working so one of us is usually home with Charlie. As a temporary solution so far my neighbor has been coming in to walk Charlie during the day and then keeps him with her in her apartment for a few hours before she heads to work. In return I offered to walk and watch her dog in the evenings. My neighbor works as a social worker/ intake person at a pysch ward where some of my clients go so we used to rant about out frustrations together and now we've worked it out so that we could help each other with our dogs lol. PS - thanks to everyone who expressed their concerns after reading that Charlie got attacked, you guys are awesome and I always appreciate your support :)
