Last week one of my client's was charged with murder. The news was shocking and devastating all at once. Although my interactions with this client were somewhat fewer than my others, he was very compliant and well mannered. However my first impression of him was that he was a bit of a follower, someone who was constantly willing to please to seek validation and belonging. I guess that's why he became gang affiliated. I can't help but be hard on myself thinking, if only I could have done more for him I could have stopped something like this from happening. I know the last real conversation I had with him I was actually praising him for staying on track since he was attending school daily, actively looking for a job and was open to the job postings I gave him and always did what was expected of him without staff having to prompt him plus did extra chores. It's such a tragedy that yet another person has died from gun violence and another tragedy that my client will be facing the rest of his life behind bars and he is only 18 years old. This incident was really an eye opener on how important my job and role in these kid's lives are and also a learning opportunity on accepting and realizing that sometimes I just can't help all my clients.
