Help!
I have a situation and I would love some input from my awesome LJ friends.
Yesterday night I shared with everyone that I got a job offer to work as a life coach for a youth services organization. Well today I got a call to come in for an interview for a position I applied to about a month ago - January 19th as a domestic violence counselor. Although it's just an interview and I'm not guaranteed the position I think I have a strong chance of landing it because I have the skills and experience to perform the expected duties so I'm pretty excited because working with domestic violence victims was my first choice in populations I wanted to serve. The interview is tomorrow at 10am and then I have my pre-employment appointment with the youth services organization. When I agreed to come in for the interview for the domestic violence shelter they said they had 10am-2pm available and I wanted it to be done first thing in the morning so I said I wanted to come in at 10am, then they asked if I had any prior commitments that day and I kind of told a white lie saying I had another interview at 1:30pm instead of saying it was a pre-employment appointment. The reason why they asked was because she told me the interview would actually take a while because they wanted me to do a skills test and then I would be interviewed but if I was busy I could go ahead and just take the test and then be interviewed at a later time. I'm not sure how long the test would be but I'm sure I could take it and be interviewed and still make it on time for 1:30pm.
Lol woah, as I was typing this I just got an email to be interviewed for another domestic violence shelter for Monday at noon. I accepted because it never hurts to widen your options and get more information.
I'm feeling a little torn so I'll make a pros and cons list.
DVC (domestic violence counselor)
LC (life coach)
Pros DVC:
- My first choice in populations I want to work with and serve
- I have more experience working with this population since I extensively studied domestic violence issues during my undergraduate and graduate years of schooling, I've also interned at a DV shelter and volunteered at 2 others so I'm pretty comfortable and familiar with how they operate
- It's a lot safer because there's less of a possibility that the women residents at these DV shelters would attack me or sexually assault me, this would put my family at ease
- Better hours, I wouldn't have to work late or over the weekend
- I don't have to get my driver's license
- More flexibility with my wardrobe choices
Cons DVC:
- The first shelter is far from where I live, it's a 35 minute drive according to Google maps and I couldn't easily take public transportation there because it's a little out of the way but if I did it would take 40 minutes by train and then I would have to take another bus or cab to get there. The second shelter is probably in my neighborhood because their main office is a 15 minutes walk for me. But location for both my DVC or LC job wouldn't matter much since me and Lawrence plan to move at the end of this summer into a bigger space now that we're staying in Chicago.
- I have a feeling that the DV shelters won't pay as much as the youth services organization because they're smaller and receive less funding where as the youth services organization is one of the biggest and oldest in Chicago and they receive about $30 million a year in funding.
- There's more pressure for me to learn Spanish as a DVC as opposed to being a LC, I have been learning but slowly.
Pros for LC:
- Good pay and benefits
- Location is ideal
- Multifaceted duties that will always keep things interesting for me
- I enjoy working in corrections and being involved with the criminal justice system
- Staff is organized and gets things done in a timely fashion
- Bigger organizations offer more room to grow and move up
Cons for LC:
- Working weekends and late hours
- Risk of being attacked and sexually assaulted by the offenders as there have been many documented cases of this happening at this organization
- Little experience working with this population
- Having to get my Illinois driver's license
I'm going to the interviews and will ask some thorough questions, let them know I have a job offer and give them a deadline on when to give me their decision. From there I think it would be easier for me to decide what I want to do but I would feel bad about turning down the LC offer if it came down to that. It's ironic that all this is happening now when I got an offer and not when I needed it to happen a few weeks ago.
