My response to a question/discussion on Tumblr regarding childhood influences of vegetarians:
"When I was little, I saw a neighbor gutting fish. A few years later, another neighbor took apart a deer in his garage. It was after incidences like these that I found myself comparing anatomy, and came to the realization that these were animals, not just food, but living creatures with a spirit equivalent in value to mine. Once, a neighbor let a very large fish die in his yard by suffocation, and that sealed the deal. It was also a big influence that my dad had been vegetarian for a decent amount of his life and so I always knew it was a healthy choice, but I can remember that one incident of being powerless to help a suffering animal whose life was valued by no one else around me as a significant root of my decision to stop eating animals."
