“I’m pregnant.”
Those words stuck Ryo like a death knell as Ueda broke the unexpected news.
“How?” He murmured after a few seconds of regaining his composure. “It was only ONCE!”
Ueda gave him a look of confusion and shrugged his shoulders helplessly.
“I don’t know. But I’m with your child Ryo.” He whispered, “What are we going to do about it?”
“Get rid of it.” Ryo said nonchalantly.
“What?” Ueda looked up in shock, not believing what Ryo just said.
“You don’t understand do you? It was just one time. Yeah you’re pretty and all but I never love you. I love Uchi and I won’t allow you to ruin our happiness. So just get rid of it.”
Ueda stood unmoved with his fists clenched, waiting for the ground to swallow him. Ryo’s cold words were surreal to him and they left a pang of myriad emotions in his chest.
“I see.” He murmured, “I guess this is it then. Goodbye Nishikido Ryo.” Ueda bowed deeply, “I’m sorry to cause you this inconvenience.”
Forcing a smile, he turned around and walked away. Despite the anger Tatsuya felt, his face was covered in rivers of tears.
4 Years Later…
Ueda was at Starbucks finishing up his monthly reports when stranger took the side opposite of him.
“Long time, no see.” That familiar teasing voice said to him. Ueda put on his glasses and stared coldly at the man.
“Do I know you?” he asked aloofly, earning a laugh from the man.
“Awww…don’t be so cold Hime. How have you been?” Ryo asked, leaning back in his chair with legs crossed.
“I don’t think my life is any of your concern.” Ueda shot back, turning off his laptop and starting to pack up his stuff.
“Oh please Ueda, is it wrong for old friends to catch up?” Ryo whined playfully but Ueda remained stoic.
“Ryo, you were never my friend. Your purpose of speaking to me is because you’re itching to know what happened to the child I carried. Since you actually have not vomited by now, I take it that your level of tolerance for me is up a notch and I applaud you for that. Yay~!” Tatsuya voiced filled with saturated sarcasm.
“Fine! Did you or did you not get an abortion?” Ryo asked directly. Tatsuya shook his head and stared dead into his black orbs.
“You’re so unbelievable…and transparent I might add. And no, I did not get an abortion. I had a miscarriage. Happy?” Ueda replied, his words laced with venom.
Not waiting for Ryo’s reply, Tatsuya took his leather bag and coat and left. He walked hurriedly to his car and drove home. His head pounding at the same beat as his heart. He still could not believe after all these years, Ryo was still the same asshole as before. He laughed bitterly at his naivety that he would never meet the horrible human being ever again.
He parked his car at the garage and walked up the stairs towards the front door. As he unlocked the door, he could hear the pitter-patter sound of footsteps coming towards him from inside his house. Ueda opened the door and was greeted by a beautiful smile.
“Papa!” a little girl yelled, hugging his legs tightly. Ueda bended down and took his little in his arms.
“Papa, I miss you. Uncle Koki is being mean again.” The tiny girl pouted with arms around her father’s neck.
“That’s not true!” Tanaka Koki retorted. Ueda laughed and kissed his daughter.
“I got you blueberry muffin.” He said, waving the brown paper bag.
“YAY~! You’re the best daddy in the whole wide world.” The adorable child kissed her papa again. “How’s work today?” she asked, Ueda eyes widened in surprised at her question.
“Work is fine. Daddy will be publishing another novel soon in Kyoto.” He explained, taking a seat on the couch with his daughter in his lap.
“Kyoto? Is that in Kansai? Like Osaka?” she asked. Ueda’s heart turned cold when his daughter mentioned Osaka because it reminded him of a particular person who came from there.
“Yes Sweetheart. How did you become so smart suddenly?” he laughed, ruffling her brown hair.
“Oh, I watched tv.” She shrugged, opening the brown bag for her sweet treat.
“Wait wait wait…” Ueda took the bag away from her, “You can only eat this after you eat your dinner.”
The little girl looked up sadly with her big dark brown eyes, trying to passively persuade her papa but when she realized it was futile, she looked down and sighed.
“Wookie dokie.” She said obediently and got off his lap. “But can daddy cook dinner? Uncle Koki made lunch and it was yucky.”
“HEY! It was chicken ramen. It tasted fine.” Koki exclaimed childishly.
“Yucky yucky! But it’s okay, I still like Uncle Koki.” She hugged and kissed her uncle.
“You’re such a charmer, aren’t you kiddo?” Koki carried her to the kitchen.
“Like Uncle Kame?” she asked teasingly.
“NO!” both men replied, making the little girl giggled.
Ueda smiled at his beautiful girl and quickly, with the help of Koki, made a healthy dinner for the three of them. After dinner, Koki left and Tatsuya cleaned up.
He went upstairs to his daughter’s room but saw her brushing her teeth all by herself in the bathroom.
“Look daddy! I’m doing it all by myself.” She grinned with foamy toothpaste in her mouth.
“Good job! Now quickly rinse before you swallow those toothpaste.” He handed her a pink mug filled with water. She gurgled and spat the remains in the sink, wiping her mouth with a small pink towel.
“Done!” she said victoriously. “But papa, why can’t we swallow toothpaste?”
“Because it will give you a tummy ache.” He took her hand and walked towards her bedroom.
“Does it hurt to have a tummy ache?”
“Yes honey.”
“But why?”
“It’s because you ate something you shouldn’t have.” Ueda replied, tucking in his sweet girl.
“So…if I eat Uncle Koki’s cooking, I’ll get tummy ache too?” she asked. Ueda laughed and kissed her forehead.
“Goodnight sweetheart.”
“Goodnight daddy, I love you.”
“I love you too, Mizuki-chan.”
