So during the holidays, we are always reminded of those people who need more than we do just to make it by. In wanting to be a future nurse, I think its important that we remember that a lot of kids are sick during the holidays with incredible pain and for some, things like cancer. How would you like to be in a hospital on christmas day, instead of at home with all of your family around a christmas tree? I would be miserable. So, I wanted to let you guys know about the Children's Hospital Holiday Wish List. If you want to help, you can either contact The Children's Hospital, or give me whatever it is that you want to give and I'll drop it off at the Red Rock's Student Life Desk. Here's the list: (if we all help, it WILL make a difference)

The Children’s Hospital Holiday Wish List 2005-2006

Children admitted to The Children’s Hospital receive the finest medical treatment, emotional support and loving care available anywhere. But children and families in the hospital have other special needs that are met through the generosity of individuals and organizations throughout the community. Thank you for your interest in helping to meet these needs.

The items we need the most are:

• Toys for Infants and Toddlers There are many children in the hospital that are within this age group (1 month - 3 years). Items that work best are those with few pieces and are easily disinfected (nothing cloth). Examples include toys from companies such as Little Tikes and Fisher Price, push button toys with lights and sounds, mobiles, shape sorters and toys to mount on cribs.

• Items for Adolescents Patients who are 13-21 years old are another group of patients that are typically in the hospital for extended periods, often times because of chronic or life threatening illnesses. Teenagers and young adults in the hospital enjoy the same types of recreational activities and items as teens who are not in the hospital.

• Electronic Items As with many children and teens these days, electronics play a large part in their lives. This includes such things as video games, CDs, CD players, DVD players, digital cameras, hand held video games and portable DVD players.

• Arts and Craft Activities Arts and craft activities provide patients opportunities to be creative and expressive. They also help to pass the time when patients are on isolation and are not able to come out of their room. Examples of items which work well in the hospital include beading activities, markers, colors, fuse beads, sand art, spin art, lap easels or trays, fuzzy posters and snap together models (none requiring glue).

• DVD and Video Movies We typically have an excellent selection of movies for preschool children and young school age children. There is always a need for movies for older children, adolescent patients and children who are Spanish speaking. We are unable to accept any rated “R.” movies.

• Items to Help Children Cope During Painful or Scary Procedures These items are used by the Child Life Specialists and Recreation Therapists during medical procedures. By helping the child focus on unique, attention-holding items, pain and anxiety can be decreased. Items such as I Spy Books, stress balls, musical push button toys, relaxation or lullaby CDs and musical or push button books can be especially helpful.

• Play Items for Use in the Playrooms,, Clinic Exam Room s and Waiting Areas Items for these areas must be safe for all ages, appeal to a wide age range, and have no small parts that can be lost. They also need to be able to be wiped down and easily disinfected. Items that work well include bead mazes, toy telephones, and pop-up toys.

Please note that we typically have a generous supply of all types of cars, trucks and dolls (including Barbie dolls), board games and puzzles.

We are unable to accept bubbles and used stuffed animals.
