Wisdom teeth surgery

I had all four wisdom teeth at around 3.30pm yesterday. I was discharged and home by 8pm.

My bottom teeth were impacted, the top ones were fine. The bottom needed to be removed because over time, they would have caused my back teeth to decay. The top came out at the same time because whilst they hadn't caused any problems, in the past I'd had two teeth taken out and I only had just enough room for the top wisdom teeth. So whilst I was under the knife, might as well get all four taken out.

I liked the anesthetist. He had asked me if I had a background in medicine because I was quite familiar with the various pain medications and anitbiotic he was going to prescribe. It helps to have grown up with nurses for parents and have worked as a pharmacy sales chick. He got my IV needle in first go (yes!). He put it into the vein on the top of my left hand. I prefer it there anyway. Besides, I have big obvious veins there. He injected the GA and I felt pins and needles rush all over the back of my head and throat and went under a few seconds after that. It was interesting.

Next thing I knew, I was waking up in the observation bed. It was good. I slept soooo good. It was dreamless sleep and nice. I didn't get nightmares either. I never have before, but it was something I was worried about.

A nurse put the stretchy head band on my head and inserted two icepacks on either side of my jaw. I read the first Twilight book to kill about half an hour before the nurses came along to check how I was again and to give me post-op instructions. Pretty standard stuff about when to take drugs, only have lukewarm/cold food for the first few days.

They must have put heaps of LA into my bottom jaw because it remained numb up until around midnight last night. That was when I went to bed because I'd taken a mersyndol forte before going to bed. It took around half an hour to kick in a make me drowsy. I didn't sleep for another half hour though.

This morning, I woke up at 10am. I didn't feel groggy or bad. There was an ache from my jaw, naturally. My bottom jaw where my wisdom teeth used to be hurt a bit more. This was not surprising given that the bottom teeth were impacted and would have taken more effort to get out. I didn't have anymore numbness due to the LA having worn off overnight. At 10.30am, kicked myself out of bed. Ironically, I was more concerned for my tummy being hungry rather than any pain that might have developed rather than any pain that would have onset due to no more residual LA.

When i started moving around, I then started to notice discomfort. I felt the ache became a little painful, I ate some mashed sweet potato that had been sweetened with rock sugar. It was sooo yummy. After I'd eaten about a rice bowl of it, I immeidately had ibuprofen and mersyndol forte. I took the ibuprofen to reduce inflammatiom. I didn't feel enough pain to warrant the mersyndol forte, but the first two days after is when the worst pain can come so I decided to have them prophylactially. I don't want to feel shitloads of pain before deciding to take it!

I'm still waiting for the mersyndol forte to make me drowsy, i haven't moved around much so I don't know yet. I'll have to see.

Anyway, back to Dr. Phil now.
