I agree with you to a large extent, but the symbolism of the vampire has changed over the years and it's very dependant on social context. For example, the Victorian (a la Bram Stoker) vampire was a symbol of their sexual repression, and because sex was so taboo in that society, the idea of it seemed particularly shocking and horrible. In our more open modern society, I think the vampire represents the "id", which is basically our base desires which includes sex, but I think the emphasis is more on the freedom to do what we ordinarily would not.

You might be right. It has changed over the years. In the Middle-ages, Vampires were considered the same type of monsters as elves, only killers. With the Victorians came the focus on sex (heard about the clinics they took women with who were depressed and basically gave them an orgasm as treatment?) and the taboo of it. It's quite possible that the vampire represents the "id". I've never considered that to be honest, but I will now :)

Ah yes. I did my A level English Lit coursework on vampiric symbolism. Also, the fangs have modern drug connotations, needles etc.

I do know someone who considers himself a vampire in the sense that he seems to 'need' blood, as in ingesting it. But it pretty much ends at biting red meat raw. He says it's a fetish, but he's never actually put it into practice on another person.

Really? That's just so cool! LOL I did most of my work on Coetzee's book Disgrace as well as Shakespeare's The Tempest (Which I hate...it just isn't as good as the others). It was interesting, but the favourite thing I wrote was in my second year where I did an essay on the relationship between Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas.

Well, the girl I talked to was more for the whole biting thing. She acted as if she was convinced of it and it was a serious discussion, not a normal chatroom. I don't know, I find it silly. I know that vampirism is a fetish and a rather fascinating one too. Maybe the guy you know will find someone who lets him bite? ;) Now that would be amusing to hear about.

Yeah, he maintains he wants the first person he really bites to be his wife. He calls it his virginity, so make of that what you will. Maybe it's the Fruedian Oral Fixation?

Oooh, Oscar and Bosie! The love that dare not speak it's name, eh? ;)
