She has to laugh, because he is so endearingly vain. As if she would ever resort to a love potion in regards to anyone. (Or poison, for that matter, though now that she's human, she might have to reconsider killing options.)

And when have I ever needed potions to get under anyone's skin, caro?

she asks, conveniently ignoring certain powders that kept her boy dreaming when she wanted to explore said dreams. She's set to make another jest about "serving" when the waiter arrives, first looking somewhat expectant at both the Immortal and Darla, and then looking distinctly crushed when hearing the Immortal's question. "Your ordered drinks, sir," he says with a frown.

Write them on his bill, dear,

Darla says lightheartedly before the Immortal can further anger the waiter (who happens to be not a bad kisser).

"We're off."

She rises again, just in time to spot Lawrence Riley reentering the restaurant, not in the company of his wife (lucky for Darla, since Colleen met her before and has no idea about her connection to Todd Campbell) but in those of two ominous looking gentlemen.

Oh, dammit.

The Immortal hides his face.

I don't think that guy likes me. In fact, there may be some kind of little court order about how I'm not supposed to be within a hundred feet of him. Or possibly meters. How am I supposed to tell how much that is, anyway?

The statement is absolutely true. Part of Alan's compromise with the Rileys, when they thought that Todd was stalking their son, involved a court-issued restraining order, involving Connor and any member of his immediate family -- unfortunate phrasing that would, of course, have included Darla if interpreted literally. But the Immortal had accepted, with no intention of interpreting it at all. It's the sort of technicality he is all too happy to ignore, under most circumstances.

However, at the moment, it presents the rationale for a possible exit strategy. Provided that Darla doesn't recognize Mr. Riley, which the Immortal hopes against hope that she won't.

Darla has never seen or met Lawrence Riley, but she was shown a photo of the happy family, back when she met Colleen in Stanford, so something about the man strikes her as familiar. In a moment or two, it'll come to her. Meanwhile, she's about to suggest an exit strategy, since she's not really in the mood for a quarrel, when the waiter indignantly speaks up, to the Immortal.

"You're not going anywhere before signing the bill, buddy!"

(He had liked the kissing, but the price for the whiskey will come from his salary if he doesn't get a signature, and no way one kiss is worth that.)

By now, Lawrence Riley, courtesy of the indignant waiter's voice, has spotted the Immortal and heads in their direction. Which is when Darla at last remembers where she has seen the face before.

Isn't that...

Why should I?

The Immortal snaps at the waiter, pissed off that the man has called attention to them. And in any case, he has no concept of why he should pay for something he doesn't want anymore. Nobody told the guy to open the bottle already.

Him? Still trying not to look at Mr. Riley. Oh, some character actor. He's been on all the Law & Order's. I think he's in town because he plays the judge in that godawful Adam's Rib remake that I'm financing. There was a dispute over the billing, that's why I'd just as soon not get into it with him.

In fact, Riley does resemble the actor who plays the judge. This led to a good deal of confusion, a few minutes earlier, when Riley and his attorneys inadvertently approached another couple in a different part of the restaurant: actors Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze, Jr., the stars of said godawful remake, who were enjoying a drink at the trendy bar along with pals Ben and Casey Affleck, Affleck's bride Jennifer Garner, Matt Damon and a blonde whose name no one is ever quite able to catch.

Riley addressed Prinze as 'Mr. Campbell' and paid virtually no attention to Ms. Gellar. The confusion left the actors and lawyers equally annoyed. As Riley and company were leaving, Casey Affleck was heard to remark, "What IS with that Campbell guy? We does he get in the papers more than we do?"

But there is no mistake of identity now, as Riley strides up to the Immortal and shakes a copy of the restraining order in his face. "Sending your people to harass my son is one thing, but leave my wife out of this. For your information, we are very familiar with Connor's lifestyle, and you have no business trying to blackmail him." Bewildered, Todd looks from Riley to Darla and back,

I did WHAT?

The waiter says "Sir, I'm afraid I must insist...", but nobody listens to him. Darla stares at Lawrence Riley in disbelief. Then the proverbial coin drops. This must be because of the old story about the tapes and photos the Rileys had been sent by Holland Manners. Colleen had told her about "some creepy millionaire" being responsible, which had been Connor's cover story. The remark about "Connor's lifestyle", however, leaves her mystified. One thing is clear, they have to get out of here as soon as possible. Especially if she wants to keep her secret line of communication with Colleen Riley open. For a moment, she is tempted to play the outraged casual aquaintance, slap the Immortal in disgust and run off, which would ensure the Rileys' approval if Colleen should present Darla to her husband. But the Immortal wouldn't forgive her. Well, in better times perhaps, but not after their recent argument.

"My fiance and I were just leaving,"

Darla announces to Lawrence Riley, the waiter and the world.

"We're not sure where to hold our wedding reception and wanted to scout places, but if this is the treatment guests are getting... come on, darling. There are other places in Boston!"

That's right! You heard the lady. I have not received worse treatment in any establishment since I came to this city. This restaurant is a disgrace and should be shut down!

He hopes that adding this complaint to Darla's announcement of their engagement will motivate Spire's employees to keep the whole incident out of the paper. Because he really really doesn't want to have to explain that one to Kara, much less Piper.

Here. And now he grabs the bottle of Scotch from the waiter and shoves it into Riley's hands. It's on me. I'm so very sorry for the inconvenience. With a flourish, he signs the check and nods at Riley. Hopefully this gesture will bewilder everyone involved long enough to let them make their escape.

So, he murmurs to Darla, following her toward the exit, Was that enough excitement, or are you still up for a little "Tristran"?

Always,

she says, while everyone stares after them in amazement and submission, including a reporter from the Boston Globe, who intends to publish his scoop on Todd Campbell finally tying the knot as soon as possible,

You can tell me all about Connor's lifestyle and how this ties with a movie you're financing en route.
