I'm so very sorry!

25 years ago, I studied in the UK. Even back then, many educated people explained to me that they didn't view themselves as Europeans, but that they felt there was a strong Anglo-American connection the UK should pursue. This surprised me - but well, I thought that the UK could be a great bridge-builder between Europe and the US. I never expected something like Brexit would happen.

Over the last few years, I feel as if we live in a world where facts matter less and less. Statements like "Well, these are MY facts." appear to become acceptable.
Who would ever have thought that people like Trump or Johnson would become their nations' leader, that so many people do not seem to understand or care that they manipulate the truth in whichever way they like. How can it be that these people get away with so many transgressions?? So yes, times are dark.

However, when I look back at the past century there were even darker times with two world wars and the horror of the holocaust.
So I comfort myself that nowadays many nations do see the benefits of working together, that e.g. unlike 100 years ago when the world was in the grip of the Spanish Flu there is something like the WHO and shared research to defeat a virus.
I remind myself that in Italy, Salvini was forced back by the "Sardines".
I tell myself that things will change again, because many young people are more progressive than the people who voted for certain leaders.
I hope that time will make a difference to the positive.
I hope that one day, UK will join the European Union again.

Sadly the world seems to be going backwards and so from where I'm standing I can't see all that much hope. :(
