I liked Sam! A lot of characters are dealing with their place in society/family. Elizabeth is constantly hearing the expectations of her upbringing in the voice of her mother. She's having trouble reconciling this with her own desires and judgement. Sam is used to being wanted, but only in certain capacities. She obviously isn't afforded the same respect as nice respectable women. If she was a man she probably would have a much easier time. Same can be said for Robin, who is breaking ground as a female doctor, but feels she has to fight everyone to achieve and hold oto the same standing as a male doctor. Her attitude is misunderstood and just reinforces the conventional thinking that women aren't cut out for such a position.
Lila is obviously a good soul, but she is hardly immune to the effects of her privledged background. She's comfortable assigning people a social caste, though not based on traditional standing or birth station, and can be rather rigid in her judgements.
Liked the idea of ice cream and other standards being luxuries in a time of rationing.
Nice part!
