Writer's Block: 9/11

I was driving through the eastern plains of Colorado to go pick up my brother from working a shift as an emergency room doctor.  I heard about the attacks on the radio and when I got my brother we spent the trip back listening to what had occurred and trying to absorb it all.  Then after I dropped him off at his house I headed north to Fort Collins where I lived.  I stopped several times on the way and everywhere I went was strangely deserted.  Then when I arrived home I turned on the television and was finally able to put some images with the horrific stories I had been hearing.  I spent the rest of the day watching the coverage with my father and my older brother.  What made it even more surrealistic and difficult to bear was that my father, who had Alzheimer's, would be struck anew by events as they looped the footage of the airplanes hitting the towers and the destruction which followed.   I will never forget that day...
