Jazz and Writing

Today, on 60 minutes, Julian Schnabel was being interviewed about making films and making art. He said it was like a jazz improve piece. He'd get an idea and start painting, not sure where it would end up. And his movies, including Basquiat and The Bell and the Butterfly, were created that way, too.

When I start a story, it's usually based on an "Oh, Cool" idea. For Shattered Magic, it was "disappearing magic". For Lawgiver it was "What if God really did meddle in our lives?".

And then I write, just write. If I'm lucky, a plot starts to form. If I'm not, I put it away for a bit and let my subconscious work on it.

Now that I think of it, a lot of creativity, including writing, jazz, art and film, involves a certain amount of improvisation.

Where do you improvise? While writing? While outlining? Do you? Don't you?

Now I'm curious.

writing, creativity
