Drabble: Tragedy (FFF, gen, G)

Notes: Written for my own little FebFF. This is not a happy drabble. (more notes at the end)
Summary: They survive side-by-side...
The beginning is their meeting, the catalyst for a change that can never be undone. It is the oxidation of iron, the heat death of the universe.
The corrosion starts early with a single lie, but in time spreads through suspicion. The rust shows, tarnishing their legend irreversibly.
The middle holds the things never expected and least desired; mistrust and betrayals, anger and accusations exchanged with the heated intensity once shared in glances.
The end is in a field, bringing them beyond full circle, back to the prologue of their story.
They survive side-by-side, lacking the trust to stand back-to-back.

End note: There was actually supposed to be a happy conclusion, but it didn't work out. This would have been the end:
The happily ever after isn't immediate, but they achieve a suitable version of it and take it with them from Smallville to Metropolis to the other side of the planet and, eventually, beyond the visible edges of the universe and beyond. (41 words)
