Up sides

The up sides to the burglary that took place at our house Friday evening...

1. Neither of us were home. Which means, neither of us were there to heroically defend our property, but OTOH, who knows if the robbers had guns/knives or not and what they would have done if panicked?

2. The robbers apparently weren't the mean types who like to hurt pets. So the cats are perfectly fine and don't seem traumatized.

3. They got our laptops, which were our main devices we used to do our business/correspondence, find out what was happening in the world, and have our entertainment (since we hardly even turn on our TVs any more). They also got one of my husband's portable ham radios, and possibly his GPS and personal cell phone. All of which are maddening to have gone.

*But* they passed up a HELL of a lot. Including a ham radio that my husband was going to use as a door prize for the Indy Hamfest the next day. (He does the prizes every year.) It looked like they were thinking about taking it (it was elsewhere than where he was keeping it) but decided not to.

Also, the vast majority of our possessions are intact. I think they were in a hurry and, though they did look throughout the house, in the end they took very little -- just what they could immediately recognize as valuable.

4. They also took the backpack that I kept my gaming stuff in. But they emptied out at least the big compartment first. So I still have my characters, dice, etc., plus a book of manga that I had borrowed from my DM. Whew! (My guess is that they took the backpack to carry the power supplies for the laptops, and maybe to nab other small items at other houses.)

5. Oh yeah... did I mention that the Indy Hamfest was the day after (Saturday)? For those who don't know, it's not a gathering of bad actors or people who sell pork products, but kind of a convention/flea market for ham (amateur) radio operators. Anyway, other stuff also gets sold at these events, such as... LAPTOPS! My husband bought a pair (used) from a reliable vendor who comes every year.

So this thing I'm using now is a different make, though about the same age, and apparently hadn't been used much. It's a little awkward having to hunt for the home, end, backspace, etc. keys. It's also lighter, which I like, and it's small enough that I could conceivably carry it in a large purse.

Anyway, thanks to my lovely, lovely husband, I am back on LJ *much* sooner than I expected I might be.

Did you miss me? :-)
