OK so once more I reach a quandary in my life. Of course given its nature it's probably a very moot point given my past history with such things. Chances are if I take it all seriously it's just going to be a case of getting my hopes up for nothing ( Read more... )

I can only speak from my own personal experience - I've worked for videogame companies, both up-and-coming and the extremely successful (read: Vegas Gambling equipment). In general, game companies expect you to put in horrendously long hours (there goes your personal life), often stress you really hard because of arbitrary "must release" dates, and seldom recognize or reward good efforts. Work hard and usually all you get is expected to work even harder next time.

If this does represent work that is going to basically be your life, be sure the people and the company are worth this kind of sacrifice.

My length of term at most gaming companies has been measured by what respect and status I seemed to get at the job. If my best wasn't good enough, or my insistance that more time is needed to do something right was vetoed, usually my days are numbered. I can't stand pushy jobs that just keep pushing.

Naturally, I come from the technical (programmer) side of things. Maybe the creative/artistic side isn't so frazzled. MMO and other 3D modeling art is a very hot talent, and almost assuredly more and more in demand as we progress toward people having quad GPU graphics adapters in personal computers. Be sure you're catching a ride on a gravy train instead of a bus to nowhere.
