early dawns and late sunsets, just like my favorite scenes

then holding hands and life was perfect, just like up on the screen

Their last day of vacation isn’t supposed to be a liberating turn of events, but as far as Lu Han can remember him and Sehun were always the exception to every rule. What EXO had planned was a simple day entitled to sleeping in, movie marathons and all the snacks they could find before the imminent fate of strict diets and constant practice. This plan remains solid and valid, and it’s exactly what happens in K’s dorm as soon as the M members get there. The only difference is that this little get-together doesn’t include Sehun and Lu Han, because by that time they’re already far, far away.

Lu Han doesn’t know how he convinces Sehun to run away to the beach with him. On the contrary of popular belief, Sehun doesn’t eat out of the palm of Lu Han’s hand. Not entirely.  It still takes more than a couple of sweet words and tender caresses to persuade him of something, especially if the circumstances aren’t exactly what you would call sane, and this happens to be one of those times.

When Lu Han suggests escaping through the night in the manager’s car to the nearest beach they can find Sehun laughs at him. Hard. Clutching his stomach and gasping for air. Lu Han only blinks at him and waits in silence for his laughing fit to reduce to a faint smile. When it finally does, Sehun comes to the realization that it’s not a joke. His face falls.

“You’re serious,” Sehun says, eyes wide with disbelief. Lu Han crosses his arms in front of his chest. “Oh my god, hyung, are you-are you crazy?” Another weak laugh escapes past his lips, a nervous one this time. “We can’t do this - it’s insa- in manager hyung’s car - I -“

“Sehun.” Lu Han steps forward, closer. “I want to go somewhere no one knows us, watch the sunrise with you, like we used to all those years ago, and then spend the entire day together doing everything and nothing at all without a care in the world.”

“I’ll be caring a lot about the consequences, thank you very much.”

“Forget about the consequences,” Lu Han says, cupping Sehun’s cheeks gently. “Run away with me for today. I’ll make sure it’s worth whatever happens to us.”

Sehun bites his lip, shakes his head. Lu Han can feel he’s slightly trembling, and his breath is ragged. “Lu Han…” He tries pushing Lu Han’s hands away from his face, but Lu Han is persistent, and the attempt is futile.

“Sehun-ah,” Lu Han whispers against Sehun’s lips. Sappy isn’t exactly included in his resume of qualities, but for Sehun he can be. “I’ll make sure you’re so happy that when the sun comes out you’ll shine brighter.”

That makes Sehun chuckle, and Lu Han smiles. “Don’t say things like that. You’re so cheesy, hyung,” Sehun whines, but their proximity permits Lu Han to feel a contradiction to his words in how fast Sehun’s heart is beating.

“You love it,” Lu Han teases, tapping the underside of Sehun’s chin. “Come with me.”

There’s a pondering silence. Sehun must be imagining it; imagining the breeze in his hair, the sand between his toes and the freezing water on his ankles as Lu Han drags him into the ocean by the hand. It’s picture perfect, Lu Han knows, just the thought of it makes his toes curl, but something still makes Sehun hesitant, and Lu Han also knows what that is.

“What if they get so mad they don’t even allow us to come back?” Sehun asks. It’s Lu Han’s turn to laugh. Sehun looks outraged at this reaction. “This is not a laughing matter, it’s a real possibility!”

“We’ll be fine, I promise.” Lu Han laces their fingers together, looks straight into Sehun’s eyes. “Don’t you trust me?”

“You know I do.”

“Then you have nothing to worry about. Whatever happens is on me, okay?”

“No, I wouldn’t want you to take the blame for this nonsense alone,” Sehun says sweetly. The next words, though, make Lu Han roll his eyes, “even if it’s indeed your fault. How are you even going to get us there? You’re not that familiar with Korea.”

“Don’t underestimate me, I know how to use a map. Let’s do this, Sehun. Please.”

Another moment of silence passes between them. Lu Han finds himself holding his breath in anticipation. After what seems like forever, Sehun exhales loudly and nods.

“What am I going to do with you, hyung?”

Lu Han beams. “You can think about that on the way. Now let’s go!”

(Perhaps the best way to reach a reasonable explanation for Sehun’s agreement is that he’s as crazily in love with Lu Han as Lu Han is with him, and that is enough.)

The sense of danger seems to thrill Sehun; in the haste of tiptoeing out of the dorm, only a backpack with the essentials on their shoulders, Sehun manages to trip over someone’s shoe and almost knock down a vase with his elbow in the process of balancing himself, and he has to stifle his laugh on the back of his hand as to not get caught. While Lu Han strives to remain composed, Sehun looks hysterical; his hand shakes on Lu Han’s grip, and Lu Han would be concerned if the gleam in Sehun’s eyes didn’t scream excitement. Once inside the car and out on the road is that Sehun lets out the incredulous laughter bubbling inside him, and the sound is so ridiculous and child-like Lu Han can’t help but join him, speeding up as much as he’s allowed to.

“You’re crazy.”  Sehun’s voice meets the wind, the only source of noise in their ears aside from the rumbling of the engine; the city sleeps and the streets are empty. Lu Han can feel Sehun’s gaze on him. “And you’re making me crazy.”

“At least we can be crazy together.” Lu Han meets Sehun’s eyes. They share a knowing smile, feeling invincible as they leave the city behind.

The sun is just beginning to rise when the beach comes into full view.

Sehun runs out of the car as soon as it comes to a stop. He gets rid of his shirt and sneakers on the way to the shore, yelling at the top of his lungs at Lu Han, “Come on, hyung!” Lu Han watches in amusement before he, too, is running running running, wrapping arms around Sehun’s torso.

The vast sea stretches in front of them like a blanket of aqua green, a sphere of light gradually peeking out from behind it. They’re breathless, chests rising and falling, Lu Han’s chin propped on Sehun’s warm shoulder, and Lu Han wouldn’t be able to take his eyes off the beautiful color palette that is the sky - shades of white, gray, blue, yellow, pink, orange, blending together until a single hue is created - if the faint red of Sehun’s cheeks weren’t more fascinating.

Sehun notices the intensity of Lu Han’s inspection, turns his head to look at him. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” He murmurs with a gentle smile.

And when Lu Han replies “Yeah,” he’s not exactly talking about the sunrise.

“I’m hungry” Is the first thing Sehun says after the sun is high up and their skin starts pricking with heat.

Lu Han rolls his eyes at him and points out that he’s always hungry, but admits his own stomach is growling after driving for so many hours.

So eat they do.

There’s a tiny restaurant which just started serving and they order a little of everything:  french toasts, pancakes, smoked sausages, omelettes and, to go along with all that, orange juice. If their managers could see them now they’d have a heart-attack (if Sehun and Lu Han don’t get one first), and this thought alone, the absurdity of what they’re doing, makes the food more delicious.

The table is small, allowing their knees to rest against each other, and narrow enough for Sehun effortlessly lean across it and sweep a finger on Lu Han’s cheek to paint it with chocolate syrup.

“Sehun!” Lu Han makes an indignant sound at the back of his throat, and Sehun grins at him. “Clean it.”

“You sure you want that?”

“Yes!”

“Alright.” And for the second time Sehun is leaning forward, but to lick the sweet out of Lu Han’s skin.

Lu Han pushes him away, glancing around frantically to check if someone saw them. But as expected there’s no around, and Sehun is humming and commenting how “chocolate syrup tastes better out of you.”

“You’re unbelievable,” Lu Han says. Sehun’s smile widens, and Lu Han struggles not to do the same. “I see all your worries have vanished.”

“Might as well seize the day.” Sehun shrugs, then dips a finger at a pool of syrup in the corner of his plate and sweeps at his own cheek. “Wanna try?”

Lu Han loses the battle against laughter before having a taste.

Silly Sehun has the ability of forgetting his swim trunks. Fortunately for him and the few tourists who would be glad not to see his bare butt, Lu Han brings an extra, but doesn’t hand it to him until he smacks the back of his head for forgetting indispensible things. Sehun only sticks his tongue out at him and proceeds to change.

Summer heat is merciless, yet doesn’t ruin anything for them. They apply sunscreen on each other’s back and face; Lu Han draws a moustache on Sehun and takes a picture of his work of art before spreading the cream around. Sehun makes obscene remarks about its appearance, which earns him another smack from Lu Han.

Protected from UV rays, they’re ready to face the beach, and that’s what they do.

It’s been so long since they had the chance to have fun, schedules forbidding them of properly relaxing, that Lu Han lets himself drown in this false sense of freedom for now. It’s simplicity at its best, a typical getaway to the beach - it’s Sehun who makes it outstanding. Lu Han commits every detail and sensation to memory, keeps them under lock and key, ensures they’re unforgettable.

Sehun has his ridiculous yellow rimmed sunglasses on, unaffected by the funny looks he receives, some that even come from Lu Han when Sehun defends it as “designer and unique like myself.” Lu Han only chuckles and shakes his head at him, secretly enjoying his antics.

They sit on the sand like the two kids they really are and build sand castles earnestly, making a pretty good job considering their makeshift tools. That until Lu Han accidently hits his foot on one of the walls and the whole structure crumbles down. Sehun gapes at him and mourns the hard work they put into their precious fortress. Lu Han’s punishment is being buried with the remains of the ruined castle. Sehun leaves him there for a good half an hour, sitting next to him as he eats ice cream (and not feeding Lu Han any) before he deems Lu Han suffered enough.

“You’re so mean to me.” Lu Han pouts, pulling Sehun into the sea the minute he’s free. “Come wash me up.”

They get in deep enough for their feet barely touch the ground. Lu Han lets the water wash away the sand, feeling relatively clean again. When Sehun steps closer to help, Lu Han decides it’s time to retaliate, and he does just that by yanking Sehun’s - or rather, his - swim trucks down. Sehun yelps, “Pervert!” but he’s laughing all the way, that ridiculous, infectious laugh Lu Han loves, and he pushes Lu Han’s head down and pretends to drown him, only to jump on his back afterwards.

It’s always a chase of cat and mouse between them, and Lu Han wouldn’t like it any other way.

Sehun is as light as a leaf in the water, and he takes advantage of it by wrapping his legs around Lu Han’s waist, resting his cheek against his shoulder. Lu Han turns his head to look at him, and Sehun looks so beautiful bathed in the green sea contrasting to his pale skin, with his hair pushed back and a content smile on his face, eyes bright. Despite the cold water, everything is incredibly warm. Lu Han’s heart flutters in his chest.

Eventually Sehun gets down and they float on their backs, fingers interlaced, letting peace involve their entire bodies, until hunger is creeping itself in their stomachs again.

Lunch is another feast full of carbs and impossibly sweet deserts, and afternoon snack isn’t any different, which includes swiss crepes and more ice cream. With their bellies full they rest on the towels laid out under the parasol. Lu Han takes pictures of the scenery, but his favorites will always be the ones of Sehun: Sehun and him making dumb faces at the camera, Sehun biting his cheek, his apple hair styled by Sehun, Sehun making a mess eating buttered corn, Sehun in the middle of talking. Lu Han goes through them all with a smile on his face. He checks the latest one - Sehun napping - and feels immensely lucky; lucky to have Sehun, to have his feelings reciprocated, and to be able to be this happy when he thought it was only possible in fairytales.

At some point Lu Han’s phone vibrates. With relief he sees it’s only Chanyeol, asking if they’re enjoying their honeymoon. Lu Han shows the text to Sehun and finds it cute how he blushes a little. Lu Han replies in the form of a picture - Sehun making a kissy face -, and seconds later comes another message: “now that you have the tan you make a perfect cali girl”. Lu Han cackles, Sehun splutters and tries to cover his face in embarrassment, but Lu Han stops him in his actions because it’s true, staying a few hours under the sun made him slightly tanned, but Sehun looks lovely like this, sunkissed and relaxed and drowsy, body curled against Lu Han’s, and Lu Han wishes they could stay like this forever.

Before the sunset approaches and they watch it from the car - Sehun lying across Lu Han’s lap, feet dandling out of the window as Lu Han threads his fingers through his bangs -, they chase the tide and collect shells along the way, and afterwards, when the lamp posts illuminate the street across the beach, they stroll around the night market and buy two matching bracelets, souvenirs from one of the most perfect days they’d spent together.

A day that comes to an end sooner than they’d like, but instead of making the mood gloomy, it makes Lu Han feel accomplished.

“Did you have fun?” Lu Han asks as he circles the bracelet around Sehun’s wrist and fixes the hook. The answer is in the way Sehun looks at him, eyes robbing the light from the stars and shining brighter.

“Yes,” Sehun replies anyway, voice as soft as his touch on Lu Han’s wrist. “More than I could imagine. Because of you.” And these words, this smile, are enough confirmation that Sehun is happy, and Lu Han's sure that it was all worth it, that he can be reprimanded one hundred times when they get home, because he gets to see Sehun glowing like this.
