From Equal Rights Washington:
"Victory is at hand! The 2009 Domestic Partnership Expansion Bill just passed out of the House and is now on it's way to the Governor's desk. When signed into law (the Governor is supportive), this Bill will add all the rights and responsibilities of civil marriage under Washington State law to Domestic Partnerships."
This is about as good as we're likely to get - and was something I advocated for. If you can't use the word marriage, pass a global law that says "Anywhere in the law the word "marriage" is used, the words "domestic partnership" shall be held equivalent.
In a few years people will stop fretting about marriage and we can just call all "marriages" "domestic partnerships" :-)
Once the governor signs (she supports the bill) the fight moves on to the inevitable inatitive, which is already running fear mongering and fact-short ads.
But raise a glass for the moment - every great once in awhile, equality takes a small shuffle forward.
