So, going to a rave was a learning experience. There are lots of drugs at raves, even ones at venues with police patrolling. The hard core drug-lovers sneak 'em in anyway. Though at the very least they ask and if you shake your head it's not like they're gonna pressure you. They just walk away, why waste their time when they could make money off someone else.
I also learned about music elitists. I went with a party who was there for the music and dancing, so I didn't have to worry about taking care of anybody who was tripping bad or utterly lost in the venue at the end of the night. As a result of this I got I lesson in dance music. It's not all the same. It's not all techno. Now there's psytrace, which is very high energy and is kind of killer as far as beats go. There's trance, which was outside, very slow and very much the drugged music. I didn't really care of that.
There was also dubstep, which I really dug. It was like a hip-hop techno hybrid. The bass was very heavy and very slow. It was easy to dance to and totally brought up this primal instinct when it came to stomping and what not. The image that comes to mind is of campfires and old hide-skin drums.
Now there's electronic, which we knew of but not very well until last night. It's very fast paced, but less so than psytrance and a little bit heavier on the bass as far at that's concerned. Not as awesome for me as the dubstep, but quite cool. This was Dustin (or FROST-RAVEN, as is his DJ name) was playing. He was quite good. I mean, his original CD got hella fucked up sometime between arrival and 3 am when he went on, so he had to mix it up entirely. And then he ended the show epically.
There's something called the drop. This require some small explanation. It happens in all breeds of trance-techno-dance-and so on. The song starts with no bass or light bass and then it disappears entirely, yielding to distortion and treble and any sampling taken. There's a rising tension in the room, waiting for the bass to drop again and when it does, it's called "The Drop." Now Dustin ended epically by ripping our bass away and raising the noise of everything else - very slowly, until finally the crowd all had their hands raised (a raver request for the drop) and then he cut it all out. And then BAM he hits us with the drop. It was such a cool experience.
Dustin, by the way, is my friend who I went to see DJ, if you hadn't guessed.
Everything from my waist down is sore. Dancing for near to 6 hours is quite a bit of effort. But was it worth it? I'd say so. I'd definitely go again. It was that much fun.
