Woo!

So, I thought my hard drive on my laptop was My computer wouldn't boot, and when we took the drive out and plugged it into an adapter, it just spun, it wouldn't register anything. So I'm sitting there thinking damn, I had a lot of pictures and music on there that I should have backed up, but didn't because I'm lazy. Now I'm figuring I'll have to spend $700 that I don't really want to give up on a new laptop... I have my desktop, but I like to have my computer for class, or when I'm bored at the library, etc.

Well, Ben and I get this genius idea that we should try and run Linux from a CD, and see if I can access the hard drive that way. So, I go and download Ubuntu (a Linux derivative), get it on a CD, and get it running... but it won't let me mount the drive. (Which, in Linux, you need to do to anything... hard to explain.) So, I go and get Puppy (another distribution of Linux), which is specifically for damaged systems. (Thank you Ben for your ridiculous knowledge!) I get it running, and BAM! Mount the drive, and there's all my data. It didn't get lost, I think if it did, I would have cried. So I moved it over to my external drive, and it's now safe. And now instead of a new laptop, I'm gonna try and find a cheap internal drive and just install Linux on it, so that way I don't have to go through getting another copy of Windows, and don't have to drop $700 on a completely new computer... even though, deep down, I would be like a little kid on Christmas with a new shiny computer on my desk.

And wow, I just realized how geeky that all sounded. Mwahahaha. I'm gonna lj-cut this, so that you're not subjected to so much nerd.
