How I Cursed A Leading Actress On Broadway

Jun 25, 2005 03:58

I wrote this up earlier to explain this the story to someone, so I figured I'd post it here for posterity's sake while I had it copied and ready to paste.

The first time I saw Wicked was the infamous show where Idina Menzel fell and fractured her ribs during the melting scene. During the 45 minutes we sat there waiting, everyone was talking amongst themselves about what they thought happened and someone mentioned it might have been that something happened with the trapdoor. I (being the total geek that I am) immediately thought of the story about how during the filming of the Wizard of Oz, Margaret Hamilton was severely burned when the trapdoor didn't work. I joked with my sister that maybe there was a Wicked Witch Curse. (I also was extremely worried about whether Idina would be able to do the Rent movie, but that was in rather poor taste.)

Fast-forward to April. On Shoshana Bean's fansite, there's a section where you can submit questions and she answers people's questions in bunches about once a month. I submitted a question asking her since she was the new Elphaba, after what happened to Margaret Hamilton and Idina, if she thought there was a Wicked Witch Curse. Her answer:

NO I HADN'T REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT IT. . BUT NOW I AM!!!!

I felt kind of bad about it and immediately submitted another question, saying that I was the one that asked it before, and that I thought about because I was there when Idina fell, and sorry for freaking her out, then asked another unrelated question. I spent the next few hours lamenting to my friends that I had cursed a Broadway actress. This was a Friday.

The next Sunday, during No Good Deed, Shoshana got her foot caught in the trapdoor and they had to stop the show for 15 minutes to make sure she was okay. The next time she answered questions, she answered mine again:

FUNNY! YOU CURSED ME! I BELIEVE IN IT NOW! I GOT MY FOOT CAUGHT LAST WEEK! AHHHHHHHHHHH!

It's become rather legendary among my friends and family. When I was watching the Tonys, I was surprised when I noticed her sitting next to Harvey Fierstein and said "That's Shoshana Bean!" My dad (who knows very little about Broadway) asked "Oh, is she the one you cursed?" So yes, my claim to fame is that I've inadvertently cursed Shoshana Bean through the internet. Now my only concern is what harm I'll bring to her when I go to see Wicked again.
