Ages ago, I made a post in the nightrunner community in which I posted a few songs that reminded me of the book series. Now, years later, I've begun a re-read of all four books in preparation for the fifth one which is fast approaching. It's my third time reading them and I simply can't get over how much I love these characters and how much I love their stories and how much I love their world. And so, I finally decided to make a proper fanmix myself to share with you all, and here it is. I hope you enjoy it!

Luck In The Shadows
1. Erik Friedlander - Airstream Envy

Alec is sprung free by 'Rolan'.

As Seregil begins traveling with Alec, he introduces the young man to a completely different way of life.
3. Andrew Bird - Anonanimal
I will become this animal
Perfectly adapted to the music halls
On the road to Skala, Alec learns to perform each role that Seregil lays out for him. He becomes apprentice to a bard, a thief, and a noble.
4. Dead Man's Bones - In the Room Where You Sleep
There's something in the shadows
In the corner of your room
A dark heart is beating
And waiting for you
You better run
Seregil is haunted by something in the darkness.
5. Penguin Café Orchestra - Flux
[instrumental]
Alec makes his was to Rhiminee, and by doing so saves Seregil’s life. He meets the wizard Nysander.

Seregil goes to the Oracle to learn out about the wooden disk, instead he is told of the roles he will play in Alec’s life.
7. Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant
What a life I lead when the sun breaks free
As a giant torn from the clouds
Alec spends time at Watermead with the Cavish family.
8. Osso & Sufjan Stevens - Year of the Dog
[instrumental]
Alec learns the ropes of nightrunning. Seregil is arrested. Kassarie’s treason is discovered.
9. Beirut - Transatlantique
Midnight surrounds you
The moonlight makes you proud
Last night while we were running around
Alec and Seregil already find themselves quite comfortable with how their lives have intertwined.
10. Bear McCreary - Something Dark is Coming

Nysander has a vision.
Stalking Darkness

[instrumental]
Seregil and Alec have the Rhiminee Cat’s reputation to maintain.

Driving me insane
Seregil realizes that he has feelings for Alec, but believes that once again he has fallen for someone who could never return the favor.

Seregil finally tells Alec that he has ‘Faie blood in him; That he will have to deal with outliving Micum and Beka and most everyone he has come to care about.
4. Beirut - Cliquot
Set fire to foundation and burn out the station

Thryis, Diomis, Cilla, and Rhiri are murdered. Alec has been taken. Seregil sets fire to the Cockerel.

Only the dead will know the course, and furthermore...
Do you really want to know of the afterworld?
Alec and Thero wake-up on Mardus’ ship and find themselves at the mercy of Vargul Ashnazai and the necromancer Irtuk Beshar.
6. Yann Tiersen - Sur Le Fil

Thero helps Alec escape. As a stag, he runs wildly through the coast of Plenimar.
7. Mumford & Sons - To Darkness
But oh, my heart was flawed
I knew my weakness

Alec and Seregil find each other. The battle begins. Mardus is defeated.
8. Jason Molina - Alone with the Owl
With the owl howling “pain, pain, pain”
With the ocean howling the same

Did I have to live this way?
Nysander asks the unthinkable of Seregil. A prophecy is fulfilled.
9. Final Fantasy - Library

Will burn, burn, burn
My every book
To warm your cold, cold blood
Alec watches Seregil become a shell of himself at Watermead after Nysander’s death.
10. Dario Marianelli & Jean-Yves Thibaudet - Your Hands Are Cold

Seregil leaves thinking everyone would be better off without him. Alec refuses to let him slink off to die. After finally admitting their feelings for each other, the two head off down the open road.
Traitor’s Moon

With Alec and Seregil living away from the city, the whole world has become just the two of them.

Seregil tells Alec about his past.
3. The Decemberists - Bridges and Balloons
We sailed away on a winter's day

Alec and Seregil sail off to Aurënen with Princess Klia, Beka, and her soldiers.

Their ship arrives at Gedre.

The glaciers made you and now you're mine
In Gedre, Seregil and Alec makes use of having a proper bed.
6. Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - Moving On Once Again

They set off for Sarikali.
7. Joanna Newsom - "En Gallop"
This place is damp and ghostly
I am already gone
And the halls were lined with the disembodied
They arrive at Sarikali. Seregil is reunited with his sisters. Negotiations begin.
8. Patrick Wolf - Apparition
[instrumental]
Seregil and Alec meet with the Rhui’auros.
9. Le Loup - Breathing Rapture
Oh, love is shaped like cities burning
Soot and ash is stretched between
The sea and sky; these lonely islands
Kiss the buildings, black and silent
Seregil is declared an outlander, and he finally finds a bit of peace in his homeland. He is no longer considered Aurënfaie by his people, but has a home in Alec.

Alec and Seregil return to Rhiminee, ready to rebuild.
Shadows Return
1. The Avett Brothers - A Lover Like You
Do I need to tell you?
I don't need to be untrue
Not when I have a lover like you
Seregil tells Alec to bed someone else in order to father a child, if that’s what he wishes. Alec asks that he never suggest such a thing again.
2. Hans Zimmer - My Mind Rebels at Stagnation
[instrumental]
Growing restless in Rhiminee, they jump at the chance to return to Aurënen. However, on the road to Bokthersa they are attacked and captured.
3. Patrick Wolf - The Bachelor (Balaika Mix)
Poor little turtle dove sitting up in pine
Mourning for your own true love
Why not me for mine
Why not, why not me for mine?
Alec thinks that Seregil is dead.
4. The Toids - This Moment
[instrumental]
Although neither one know it, both Alec and Seregil are sold to the alchemist Yhakobin. Ilar torments Seregil, blaming him for his misfortune.
5. Barcelona - First Floor People
Who am I to fool now if you’re gone?
This hole is deeper by the hour
My hands are bleeding
I spin around, you’re nowhere
I’ll throw away my ugly plans
They’re too tired to push me anywhere but down
Seregil learns that Alec is being kept in the same place as he. Seregil plays his role with Ilar, looking for his opportunity to free both himself and Alec.
6. The Rachel’s - Honeysuckle Suite (Sugar Maple-Elm-Sweetgum)
[instrumental]
After all his experiments, Yhakobin uses Alec to create a rhekaro.Yhakobin kills the first one, but soon creates a second.
7. Beirut - Cherbourg
Well it's been a long time
Since I've seen you smile
Gambled away my fright
Till the morning lights shine
Alec learns that Seregil has been a slave in the same place as he all this time. They both escape on the same night and are reunited in the process. Alec insists that they save both Ilar and the rhekaro.
8. Colleen - Babies
[instrumental]
Alec names the rhekaro Sebrahn.
9. Cloud Cult - When Water Comes to Life
And you'll feed the ghosts
And you'll feed the living
You will be a stranger
And you'll be a friend
You'll be the leper
You'll be the healer
You'll be the hero
And the tragedy
They are found and attacked by Yhakobin and his men. Alec is killed while saving Seregil’s life. Sebrahn in turn kills their attackers and brings Alec back to life.
10. Owen Pallett - What Do You Think Will Happen Now?
The sun is up
My arms are wide
I am a good man
I am yours
Alec, Seregil, and Sebrahn are found by Thero. They head back to Gedre.
