Pot is no longer THE gateway drug; the title has passed to caffiene.
I'm not entirely sure I agree with this though. Sure, caffiene is a drug, and sure half the nation, if not the world, is addicted to it, but it's not a gateway drug. Not many people are walking around trying to get a buzz off of caffiene, failing, and going to something stronger. What IS happening however, is that people are coming to rely too much on caffiene. I do; I take a diet pill before soccer games so I can keep up with the boys. Of course, it's more common that someone wakes up, drinks too much coffee, and then goes on their day less able to sleep than they should be.
That annoys me even more than drunks do. Drunks annoy the hell out of me, by the way. I mean, even the second half Chapter 6 of Revelations (aka The Dark Room) is a somewhat subtle rant against people who drink too much. And although the obvious focus is drunk men, I have several jabs at women who drink as well (but considering that the only other female character in the story is a minor one, she, well, doesn't play a big role.)
Amazing, first I defy the laws of physics (the spaghetti story) and now I defy the laws of fanfiction and may-sue-ness. I've managed to take canon character and turn them into original characters without anyone noticing. I've managed to create a mary-sue version of Hermione, and made her utterly tolerable (I'm not sure about likeable, talent is required for that.)
By the way, that first one, turning a canon character relatively original; THAT isn't the amazing part...that's done all the time, and the authors get bitched out all the time. It's the fact that I've NOT been bitched out, not even had such a major defect mentioned, that's amazing. Of course, maybe it's just that noone other than Alex reads the thing.
