RIP Dan Fogelberg, 8/13/1951-12/16/2007

Dec 17, 2007 00:17

Dan Fogelberg was a poet-philosopher who could break your heart with songs. I saw him in concert more than once, but my favourite time was when he appeared alone - him, his guitar, his piano, and a microphone.

His album, Innocent Age, was a concept album of particular beauty, which was the soundtrack of my early marriage, pre-children. When his marriage broke up, the album he put out, full of songs of the agony of lost love, could make my heart stop with the bittersweet pain of it all.

When SubHub and I heard he was sick with cancer, three years ago, we shed tears and kept an eye out for news of his health status. This morning, he died. We mourn him and honour his art, the legacy he leaves to the world.

I have embedded below his "Christmas" song, The Same Old Lang Syne.

Sing with the angels, little Danny Fogelberg.
