so i'm planning a trip to Punxsutawney Pa for groundhog's day. i think an interesting detour would be to stop by Centralia to check out the scorched earth and the massive underground coal fire that's been burning for 40 years. of the 2000 people that lived there, only 11 remain. and those 11 people grow tomatoes all year round because the temperature of the soil in their yards is about 72 degrees, even when then air is only 10 degrees. here's the google satellite map. notice the LARGE burnt patches. it's a real life modern day ghost town.
