Sure, yes, he's been gone for a while (I'm vague on the time but at least a week, I'm sure) but the moment that the official cause is suicide, which is what will be on the death certificate, what she'll have to call it (even if she goes with press friendly 'self-inflicted' for the press as an added layer, it just like realizing he's gone all over. And yeah, there is no more chance of anything else being the cause. So it's like reality just sets in and sets in HARD at that.

Regarding the smell thing- I still don't know if it was the right analogy I wanted but all I've read was something about the smell of rusty metal which I don't think Maureen would know well enough to make the immediate connection in the moment. I'm curious about your smell thoughts. As for the other senses: bit by bit I'll reveal the whole scene as Maureen is 'triggered' if you will. But I know that the smell would be the first thing to hit aside from the complete absence of sound.
Yeah, the bathroom thing is definite mind thing. Because she can't very well avoid the bathroom forever, she has to make it a clean place. Even if it is clean, along the lines of Lady Macbeth's "Out,damn spot", the bathroom can't be clean enough. It's something she'll have to wrestle with as she moves on to living again.
And keeping going is Maureen's only choice and she knows it, but you're right. It won't be easy to do, but it won't be impossible either.
