Of the two celebrity deaths these past few days, I have to admit, I'm more saddened by Jerry Nelson. I'm not one to be saddened by celebrity deaths, not often. And I'm not discounting Neil Armstrong. But in my PERSONAL life, Muppets play a bigger role. Weirdly enough, more in my 20s than in my childhood. I don't even know why. I'm sure there is some part of me that just likes liking something that is meant for kids, but it's more than that. The Muppets are probably the most all encompassing accepting group ever. Sesame Street, at least in America, is one of the most diverse streets ever and The Muppets- well it's a frog, a bear, a pig, plus....Gonzo. They've been around since the 70s. They don't go away. The Henson company pulled out of it's partnership with Chic-Fil-A when Dan Cathay admitted to pouring money into anti-gay causes, so even though the are part of Disney, I think, if the issue ever came up, The Muppets would be the first to accept LGBT charecters as a part of it's core and wouldn't bat an eyelash. It hasn't come up but it will. I just know it. Either with Kermit and co or with Sesame Street. But either way, The Muppets (either Sesame Street or The Muppets proper or anything Henson co related...Fraggles, etc) are my childhood and my young adulthood in one furry lump sum. I just love them and as always I've got a thing for the behind the scenes and the Muppeteers behind them. And aside from Dave Goelz (and possibly Steve Whitmire if Bean Bunny ever comes up , but Steve's filling the big green shoes of Kermit), Jerry Nelson was one of the last to still be voicing the same character. Henson's gone, Frank Oz is doing things like directing weird dark comedy movies, Richard Hunt is gone. And even though as he got older, Jerry stopped doing the work of the physical puppeteering, he was still recording voices. In fact if I'm right, the Count on Sesame will still be voiced by Nelson for a while because he'd recorded at least a part of a season already.
Anyway, now you are gonna get some Nelson/Muppets love.
Cause I hate fighting with Tumblr and I can't spam FB too much.
Also- There WILL be stuff from The Muppet Christmas Carol even though it's August. I loooooove his work as Robin and I love some of the songs from the movie.

I can't find any clips from the show of this song but this was done at Jim Henson's memorial and I used tubechop to cut out just a song called "Wemblin' Fool". Jerry's the older gentleman
