Working

I have started working again after a 12 year break. It's at the Cheese Gourmet in Linden. I was approached by the owner of a local shop offering me a job. She said that she needed someone who "didn't NEED a job" (more on this later), was "passionate about food", and "who liked people". Anyway, I accepted after giving her a CV in which I stated BEFORE I took the job, the hours that I could work. I have to fetch the boys from school from 2.15 onwards and then be home to supervise homework etc.

She accepted all my working hours and said that I would have to work 2 Saturdays a month. This I also agreed to. A week after I started there (there being no formal contract), she stated that she had said, and I had acknowledged that I would work 3 Saturdays a month. NO. I stood my ground and it looks like she has arranged things to suit me. That's the one thing about me working because I wsnt to - if I don't like things, I can just walk away. Anway, they pay people cash, per hour - no UIF, pension etc. as we are casual labour.

Two weeks after I started working there she came to me and said that I was very slow and the arrangements were not working for her. She actually needs someone on a permanent basis (working full day) and on a Management level. Why did she employ me then?

I love the work there - it was difficult at first at I had to get to know all the cheeses, where they are positioned on the table. Jo (the manageress) doesn't know just how much she knows as she has been in this business for 20 years. I, coming in cold had to learn EVERYTHING very quickly.

Last week she made the comment that I was still a bit slow, must learn to do 2 jobs at once but that I am very systematic and NEVER make mistakes and that she supposes that she "can't have everything". So right. I can only get faster with time and "systematic and never make mistakes" is something that you can't teach someone easily.

We will see how long it takes her to find that "ideal" person who is willing to be in a manager position without any perks and works 9 - 10 hours a day without a break or even sitting down once (there are no chairs). HA
