Tomorrow night, Monday February 4th, 2008 at 7pm EST, in an act to make themselves known as the first and only organization in the history of mankind to deliver a galactic pun, NASA will beam the Beatles' 'Across the Universe' quite literally
across the Universe. Now we all know there isn’t another song more suited to make such an ironic journey into the depths of space, however that doesn’t answer why they would bother do it.
‘Why’ is a tough question to answer because it is a circular one. What I mean by that is that the satisfying answer to ‘why’ is always subjective, meaning one can be presented with the answer, decide it’s not good enough, and continue to demand more.
This implies the true answer could be that they were just feeling silly one night after several boxes of gummi bears.
Perhaps a better question would be “What are their motives?”
There, that’s better.
Their motives are to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the song, and the 45th anniversary of the Deep Space Network (and probably to receive a personal letter from Paul McCartney).
Hm, well, yes, I can see that, but doesn’t it still seem like bits are missing from the equation?
It was all marketing strategist
Martin Lewis’ idea, perhaps I’ll write and ask him if it was some sort of marketing strategy.
Here, take a look at this:
That is the
Arecibo Message, beamed into space back on November 16th, 1974.
Confusing isn’t it? Well, unless you’re familiar with binary, but even then...
Perhaps we humans should really sit down and think these messages through before beaming anymore out into space triggering mass intergalactic confusion (we have enough of it down here).
Nevertheless, I'm excited to take part in the worldwide playing of 'Across the Universe' as it makes its way across the Universe.
