A poll and some thoughts on Inception.
Poll What does it meeeeaaaaaan? A few thoughts:
- GORGEOUS. Say against Nolan what you will (and I do), but his movies sure look amazing.
- I really really liked it. I was hoping I would really really love it, but it was still very good.
- My main problem was that, with the exception of Dom (who I thought was called Don, but the internet says Dom, so whatever) and Robert Fischer, none of the characters actually were.. you know.. characters. They were plot-points. Very well-acted and cool plot-points, sure, but still. The most obvious one was Ariadne (LOVE the name), of course, who was nothing but a stand-in for the audience so things would get explained. But even Arthur and Eames, awesome as they were, never really went beyond "The Forger" and "The Point Man".
I realize that that's not what the movie was about. It wasn't supposed to be a character-study, it was about an idea. A very, very interesting and cool idea. But the fact remains that the character I most connected with, who most felt like an actual character, was Fischer. And I know they said that they were giving him a better connection to his father, and if he won't split the company he'll have a monopoly on... something... but it still made it a little harder to root for their success.
- I do love a good Ocean's Eleveny "Getting a crew together" story.
- While I didn't actually ship their characters that much (Arthur/Eames otp), I now totally want a movie that has Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page as a couple. Get on that, Hollywood.
- If Dom did wake up, why did Michael Caine pick him up from the airport and didn't seem all that surprised to see him? What did he tell him, "Hey, on the slim chance that I won't get arrested on arrival, could you give me a ride home?"?
- I probably need to see this a couple of more times to wrap my mind around every little detail. But overall I'm weirded out by people saying they "didn't understand anything omg", which I have heard from several customers and one co-worker at the cinema. I'm not saying I'm clear on everything, or that I made my mind up about what I think happened at the end, but it's not really hard to "understand", you know?
- Having the main couple be someone called Mal (which, weirdly, they're pronouncing Mawl in the German dubbing) and someone with the last name Cobb will probably make some slashy Firefly fans happy.
- I was kind of expecting/hoping for more Dream Logic/surreal shit happening. I think this is partially the trailers fault, like with Pan's Labyrinth where everyone was expecting a lot more fantasy.
- I think this post makes it sound like I liked it less than I did. I really liked it. It was really good. I want to see it again. Many times.
- Link me to your reaction posts, please?
This has nothing to do with the movie, but I was sitting next to the two most annoying women EVER. They kept talking REALLY LOUDLY, stating completely obvious things, exclaiming how much fun they were having/how much they liked the movie/how they didn't understand what was going on. At one point they went outside TO SMOKE, and then actually wanted me to tell them what they missed! And the one right next to me kept SITTING ON ME. Literally. She actually used my legs as a foot-rest. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.
Now I'm gonna rewatch Mysterious Skin, because JGL is awesome and needs to be in my life more often.
