Like most misery, it started with apparent happiness.

Day 06 - A book that makes you sad

"I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn't already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race-that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant."

First I was gonna take Deathly Hallows for this one, because I think no book ever made me cry as many times and make me feel as emotionally exhausted as DH. But, even though I sobbed at every other page, I can't really call it "a book that made me sad". A lot of things in it make me sad, but overall, it's much more a "makes me happy" than "makes me sad" kind of book (Geez, ain't I eloquent today).
And while I don't mean to say that The Book Thief didn't also make me happy, or make me laugh, or give me hope, there is no doubt that it made me incredibly sad. The deep, painful, heartbreaking kind of sad. After I finished reading, I just SOBBED on my bed for over half an hour.

But it's definitely not JUST a sad book. It's not JUST anything. It has original, clear and yet poetic language, a unique and amazing narrator, it has great dry and utterly surprising humor. I unreservedly recommend this book to anyone. Go and read it. Just be prepared to find your heart a little more broken when you're done.
