I was telling my counselor that I would like it if my dad (who has a terminal illness) would write me something about what he likes or admires about me. Something I could keep after he is gone. My dad is not always one for expressing feelings. She said, "Why don't you just ask him?" So I did, even though it was scary. It turns out he has a fear of writing. Ironic, since I am in the communications field.
Here it is:
Hi daughter,
As you know, any writing assignment is difficult for me. I worry if I'll get everything in and if what I say is not quite right. I'm much more comfortable if I call it a draft. However, I know you need this, so here it is.
Here are things I admire about you, [daughter].
You are a loving and devoted daughter.
You are self-sufficient.
You are articulate; you express yourself well verbally and in
writing.
You are artistic.
You are affectionate.
You are a patient learner.
You are intellectually curious.
You are a reader.
You are generous with gifts.
You are caring for animals.
You are very pretty and present yoourself well.
Love,
Dad
