My First Sock
The lacy top I posted about a week or so ago is on hold at present since I've run out of yarn of the right colour. (I changed my mind about the multi-coloured stripes and am going to do the whole thing in two colours - black and dark teal.) So while the rest of the yarn is on order from a place in Brisbane (can't get it locally, it seems) I thought I'd have a go at sock-making, using the lovely flame-coloured sock yarn I picked up at the craft fair a couple of months ago.
Not bad for a first go, is it? I based it on
this pattern, but being me I just had to personalise it a bit, so I added the black bits for contrast. I do like the end result.
I used the short-row method for turning the toe and heel as described in the pattern, and the edges seemed rather untidy. I'm not sure what I did wrong there, but at least they're in black so they're not so visible. Another thing I'm not quite happy with is the cast-off at the top being a bit tighter than I expected. I used a standard rib cast-off, and expected it to have a bit more flexibility than it does. Anybody got any ideas what might be going on here, or what alternate cast-off technique I could use for sock #2 that has a bit more stretch in it?
