Smokers RIGHTS!

Nov 14, 2005 08:18

Washington State has recently passed a completely ridiculous law that prevents smokers from having their own rights as well as establishments from having their own rights. It makes smoking illegal inside any business, as well as 25 feet away from entrances. The law is overkill and is going to cause many businesses to be harmed, as well as remove ( Read more... )

I have the same problem with the smokin ban that I have with the seat belt law. It is more government control pure and simple. Sure I care about the businesses, and I like having a smoke when I drink. But the steady chipping away at our right to make choices for ourselves is what offends and frightens me. Civil Liberties are down the shitter.

I have watched our society dumb down in the last 20 years. We have lost our attention spans, look at TV so bright and shiny. From MTV to the Cable news network. When I took off for a couple of days I ended up watching some TV and found it almost unwatchable between the quick cuts and the pandering, I was watching some crime drama, CSI it was and they had clever little mini movies to physically explain everything that they were describing as if the words were not enough for anyone to follow. Sure it is I suppose more interesting to watch some quick cuts on a knife and fuzzy cam shots of hauling a body down to a lake, it gives us even less to do with our minds while we watch the TV. Nothing to feed the imagination which is the seat of invention.

Our Educational system is doing the same thing. Pass the kids if they learn it or not. Test the crap out of them so our teachers have to teach the kids how to pass tests rather than to think. Rats in a cage. It's all just a big holding tank. So we can fuel our great service economy. We got the jobs at McDonald's when we were in high school, it taught us how to work, and we worked hard, and we aspired to something better, and the guy who managed the store was a high school senior, now in 2006 that job is held by a 30+ year old who has kids. These are not suppose to be the careers the are just suppose to be jobs. It is so fucked up. But we are educated to become cogs in the machine and not part of an organic whole. Back in the day big corps. liked to hire people with liberal arts degree's because it meant that the individual could think,in a multifaceted way, and that was good for the company, now a liberal arts degree means squat.

We don't need to remember even our phone numbers anymore. I know lots of people who can't, that never happened 15 years ago.
And cell phones and computers have had a huge impact on the public and private communication. We have sexual relationships that are carried out where no one really makes physical contact. And private phone conversations carried on in public that never should be.

We as culture have forgotten how to be social, polite, connected. Now I believe in kicking certain societal rules in the ass and out the window, but at least I am smart enough to know what I am kicking, and why I like the kick to have a purpose. I aspire to just be a dumb-ass. When I walked away from Christianity. I gave it a shot I listened I have read the damn book cove to cover more than thrice. But it didn't work for me so I left it where I found it. And I feel free to question the true believers for whom religion is just bells and whistles and an excuse not to think rationally or responsibly. I love to call bullshit on them and know their own text better than they do.

I am ranting...First thing in the morning too...Ah well.

The point being I think the license is a great idea. But I still think the bill is dangerous and it is only one more nail in the coffin.

Oh by the way can you get the Dec. 21 (thats a Wednesday) off for Yule? You are still family you know. Hope you can make it. Let me know as soon as you can.
