passion play

There's so much passion these days. Have you noticed this phenomenon? People love to announce their passion for this or that. I've read of passion for exercising, for scrapbooking, for cooking, for various social causes. Passion is apparently now a completely positive and admirable state of being. Remember when passions were sometimes ungovernable? How can you be a slave to passion if your passion is scrapbooking? Now we start to see the demand that others be passionate too. People insist on it, it's a barometer of your engagement with life. I saw someone's MySpace profile and it basically demanded that everyone be passionate "about something, it doesn't matter what." It doesn't matter what? What if I'm passionate about pedophilia, or burning things? I don't think I'm passionate about anything, and if I were I probably wouldn't call it that, even to myself. Wait, there is something I'm passionate about.
