"There's butterflies in my stomach." Jared couldn't sit still in his seat. His leg kept bouncing. "Butterflies are normal, right?!"
Sandy sat across from Jared at the dining table, smiling as she watched her best friend cave to his nerves. "Yes, they're normal. Especially when your first date is hot like Jensen."
"You're not helping," Jared said through his teeth. His body finally froze when the doorbell rang, looking at Sandy like a deer caught in headlights.
"Well, Romeo," Sandy said, "what are you waiting for?" Jared still didn't move. She giggled and sighed, getting up and heading for the door. "I guess I'll get it."
She returned to the dining room, followed by Jensen, and Jared stood. She grinned, watching the 27-year-old man before her suddenly turn into a teenager. Sandy took her seat, watching the two men stand awkwardly three feet from each other. Her giggle broke the silence.
"No wonder it took you two so long to ask one another out," she said, “let alone go on an actual date."
Jensen opened his mouth to speak at the same time Jared chuckled. They looked at each other. "You ready?" Jensen said, his lips curled into a smile.
"Let's get out of here," Jared agreed.
Jared had to relax. It was sure to seem like just any random day hanging out on the set. He began to wonder why Jensen had insisted they do things the old fashioned way; that he pick Jared up and they go to dinner.
"What if I want to pick you up?" Jared asked playfully.
"Too damn bad, I'm picking you up," Jensen responded. "Deal with it."
Jared had just laughed it off. Inside he was thankful that Jensen agreed to go out in the first place. They only had a few months before filming was to resume again, so he jumped on the chance to bring it up at the wrap party.
"You know, I had a couple things planned for us to do," Jensen said as they approached his car, "but we need to take advantage of this good weather for once. Go grab Harley and Sadie. Let's go for a walk."
Jared's face brightened. He jogged back inside and emerged five minutes later with two tan colored dogs, leashed and at his heels. Sadie quickly took the lead of the group as they met Jensen on the sidewalk, with Harley trailing on her right side. Jensen reached over to take a leash from Jared, tugging gently until Harley moved to walk in front of him.
The park was quiet, and Jared let the dogs loose, knowing they'd stay close. Jared and Jensen sat on a bench, watching them play. Jared turned into a dog himself at one point, wrestling with Harley and Sadie for a while, under Jensen's watchful eye. The sun began to set when they took the dogs back to the house and they progressed to their usual restaurant.
Throughout dinner, conversation kept leading back to their work. Sometimes there was a lull in the conversation, times when Jared felt awkward. He was surprised when Jensen said something.
Jensen leaned into the table. "Why does this seem so awkward?"
Jared smiled, staring at his fingers as they played his with his napkin. "Maybe because we're used to each other as friends... not necessarily boyfriends." His lifted his eyes to look at Jensen, who was looking directly at him.
"You're probably right." He sank back in his chair. Still looking at Jared, he suddenly reached into his pants pocket, pulling out his cell phone.
Jared's eyebrows scrunched together in slight confusion. "What are you doing?"
"I have an idea," Jensen said.
Jensen started hitting buttons on the phone, then began to type what Jared thought was a text message. Jensen set the phone down on the table, and a few seconds later, Jared's phone chimed. Jared reached into his pocket and looked at the screen. He looked at Jensen curiously, then opened the message.
Hey, how's it going? Thinking of you.
Jared smiled and hit the reply button.
Going good. On an awkward first date, you're kinda interrupting.
Jensen's phone moved around the table as it vibrated the alert of the message. Jensen chuckled as he read.
Obviously it's not going well if you're answering me.
"You are such a dork," Jared said with a laugh, slipping his phone back into his pocket.
"It broke the tension, didn't it?" Jensen smirked. He picked up his phone again. Jared thought because he had put his phone away, Jensen would end the texts. He realized he was wrong when his phone chimed again.
I'm dying to kiss you.
Jared felt his face warm. His reply simply said, "ditto."
"You want to get out of here?" Jared asked.
"Badly."
They left and Jensen drove back to the house, parking in the drive way. As they both exited the car, Jared gave Jensen an accusatory look.
"I hope you don't think you're getting lucky tonight," he said with a small smile. "Not on the first date, honey."
Jensen laughed. "How about I walk you to the door?"
As they walked up the sidewalk, Jensen's hand gently grabbed a hold of Jared's. Jared smiled to himself again. When they reached the door, they turned and faced each other.
"This is where I act the girl and tell you what an amazing time I had," Jared said.
"Or not."
Jensen wrapped his hand around the back of Jared's neck and pulled him down, directly to his lips, making contact for a few seconds before breaking. Jared's long arms wrapped Jensen's torso, pulling their bodies together, and kissed him again. Jared put all of himself into it. It was gentle and soft, even innocent, everything he felt a first kiss should be.
They parted, leaving Jared breathless. Jensen stepped away, starting back towards the car. Jared grinned when he heard his six favorite words that Jensen ever said.
"I'll see you on set tomorrow."
