So, yeah, yet another insane Death Note AU ficlet. This one is really short. It's...L's POV again, in the present tense. I almost always write in the past tense, so it was odd to write in present tense...but that's how this one went when I was thinking of it, so I just wrote it that way. *shrugs* Also contains creepy Liert! Who is threatening people, as usual...-__-;;;
And I wrote a bunch of code today, too--I'm writing a program to do simple Fire Emblem-style arena battles. So far I can create Lyn, Eliwood, or Hector (stat-wise, anyway, the characters are basically a bunch of stats in this program, there's no GUI yet), I can level a character up, and I can promote them. Next I'm hoping to write the Battle class, and do methods for getting experience, dealing damage, all that good stuff...there's so much stuff online about all the Fire Emblem calculations and numbers and stuff that it's not too hard. Also, my Python learnings are going well. I pretty much understand how stuff works, but getting used to programming that way is so hard...I just love my brackets so much. *laughs* I'm so productive lately...well, sort of. It's weird! *laughs*
Anyway, here's the ficlet. Oh, right--spoilers for L's name. If that counts as a spoiler...? At least, I think this is his name. It's what was in the 'How to Read' book, and that's canon, sooo...yeah.
A Name
(L is more worried by Liert knowing his name than Ray knowing it.)
"L Lawliet."
Liert says this without any warning, or even a hello. Just wanders up and said it. He doesn't even look at L; they're the only two people in the room, so the comment is obviously directed at him.
"An unusual name," Liert adds after a short silence, perhaps realizing that L was never going to reply to just his name.
L still doesn't say anything, just watches Liert carefully, because this man knows his name even though L didn't give it to him, and that sends off all kinds of alarms in his head.
"Ray needs a name and a face to kill," Liert says after another silence, and L is not sure whether this is a threat or not, because Liert says it so calmly, just like he says everything. As if it was an offhand comment, purely informational. But it isn't, because Liert knows that none of them use L's name, that it is supposed to be secret. When Liert tells him this, L hears 'Ray has the second Kira's power', and knows that maybe he's going to die, because they have no way to protect themselves in this unknown place, surrounded by dangerous people.
"Don't worry," Liert says next, turning to look at L, watching for his reaction. "She won't kill you," he says, and there is just enough emphasis on the 'she' that L knows Liert is telling him that the only reason they are still alive is because Ray is protecting them, and Liert won't disobey her direct orders.
And the casualness in Liert's voice when he says it is worst of all, because this man does not even flinch at the thought of murder, it is something commonplace and dull for him, this man is a murderer, but somehow he is L and L is him and it doesn't make sense, none of this does, and L still doesn't know why Liert is telling him any of this.
Liert turns and leaves without another word, without L having said a thing. And L just stands there and wonders how the hell they got into this mess in the first place, and how it is possible that this man who shares his face is more frightening than a woman who can kill just by seeing a face.
[the end]
Damn, Liert is so freaking creepy. Well...he has issues with L and Watari. Because they're not him and not Sir Wakar. Light he doesn't mind, just because Light reminds him of Ray so he's all 'whatever, I suppose he's not completely useless'. Also, he thinks Light is interesting because of the whole 'killed people but didn't kill people' thing, since Kira was technically in Light's body when he killed. So, there's a connection, but it's not direct...Liert sees these things because of his magic. So, he thinks it's interesting. As one might imagine, Light does enjoy this interest at all. Because it's freaking creepy. *laughs*
Also: Liert actually has no ability to see people's names by looking at them, but Ray told him their real names. She's trying to protect her troops, so she can't afford to take chances. She knew the names they gave her weren't their real names because Liert can tell when someone is lying, so she checked their actual names to be safe. Just in case. And of course, since Liert is the one with the magic to actually have any use (other than killing) for their names, she tells him. Also she trusts Liert, for whatever insane reason. XD
But Ray is actually not very scary, even though she has the killing power. Because she only uses it in combat, really, or when there's no other way, and she's using it as a weapon in war, not seeing it as any different from any other weapon (she has magic, and so does everyone around her, so it's not as out-of-the-ordinary as it is in the Death Note universe). Liert is the creepy one. He's really just trying to creep L out here; he wouldn't actually kill them. Well, he'd kill Watari, but not L or Light. Liert typically doesn't kill people for the hell of it; he just likes to pretend that he does, so people will be afraid of him. Creepy bastard. ^_^;;;;
So yeah...time for some sleep now. I really want to write the Insane Death Note AU at some point, so...I'm rereading bits of Death Note. Damn, these characters are hard to write. It's because they're supposed to be so damn smart! It's hard to write someone being really smart! The leaps of logic they make in the manga...*laughs*
