I believe some of the confusion may involve the Shinsengumi from my world, which seems to differ greatly from the one the rest of the Shinsengumi come from. For one, they are based in Edo, not Kyoto like the others.

Perhaps your side has heard of something called 'tact'. It's rather helpful in the side of strategy that involves avoiding getting people killed.
