As both the flist and the f-of-list have been growing somewhat of late, and as I'll probably forever be prone to the drive-by-friending impulse and it's nice to have a place to direct people:
some points concerning this journal. [last updated 07/2009]
1. HEY GUYS
IT'S THE INTERNET
Which is to say: I take very few things seriously, least of all myself. Even among those I do take seriously, there's pretty much nothing which is DEATHLY SRS to me. Occasionally I make light of things other people think are DEATHLY SRS and they get offended. Sorry.
Corollary: I'm virtually impossible to offend. Also, I sort of hate political correctness. I hate confrontation, too, and I don't go out of my way to be a douchebag, but my life doesn't revolve around the goal of tiptoeing around others. Likewise, nobody should feel obligated to tiptoe around me for fear of upsetting my delicate sensibilities, because I really don't have any.
2. I use the "friends list" in a couple of different ways:
- Mostly I use it as a fancy RSS aggregator. I get my internet comics, a handful of blogs, some comms and fandom newsletters, and various personal journals all in one handy-dandy feed. Which personal journals go on my flist depends on a number of factors which vary on a daily basis. Some belong to "friends" in the traditional sense of the word; some belong to people whose fic or art or other fannish contributions I consistently enjoy. Some belong to people whose capslock makes me lol, okay? Sometimes I add a lot of journals on impulse; sometimes, lacking in time or interest, I cut a bunch of journals. It's only personal insofar as it's about how much time I, personally, have available.
- I also friends-lock a lot (maybe half) of my posts. This usage of the "friends list" has to do with privacy and my desire to limit the extent to which personally-identifying information can be linked to my fandom pursuits. (My rule of thumb: if a co-worker or a member of my immediate family could identify me from it, it doesn't belong in a public post.) Consequently, a lot of posts which are flocked are also filtered to a specific subset of the flist, because the journals I want to have on my RSS feed don't necessarily correspond to the journals of people with whom I want to discuss my personal life.
- Fandom-related content is nearly always public; fic is always public. I always reply to feedback, and I generally reply to other comments provided I have something to say, though both of these things can sometimes take a while. Also, I am totally down with drive-by commenting, commenting among yourselves, etc. Go crazy.
3. I'm a grownup. (Sort of.) Which means I get to make my own rules. Or choose not to have any at all.
What else? Oh, I really hate those portmanteau pairing names. And beets. Ew. If you are a beet, it might be best that we defriend each other now, before things get ugly.
Other questions? If you've friended me and want to leave a comment introducing yourself, explaining why you friended me, sharing your thoughts on beets, etc. -- this is the place to do it. Likewise if you're wondering why the heck I've friended you -- even if it was ages ago. Or even if we've known each other for years, but there's something you've always wanted to ask. Or which just occurred to you. Fire away.
