“This would be a nicer date if you could relax better,” Yasu frowned, leaning forward and trying to get into Subaru’s field of vision while he turned his head and looked anxiously in all directions.
They were sitting at a coffee bar, in a little table next to one of the windows. Ever since they came into that place, Subaru had suddenly got nervous, as if he was expecting for something to happen. Yasu could tell it had to be with his birthday; Subaru was so obvious inviting him the day before to go shopping at a guitar store they never went to in the end.
“Eh? This is not a date…” Subaru lied, blinking at him.
“You’ve been holding my hand all day,” Yasu said, pointing with his chin at their hands entwined under the table, “and seems you’ve prepared a surprise for me, but something’s not going well.”
Subaru clicked his tongue and quickly moved his hand away from Yasu’s.
Yasu shrugged and drank a bit more of his blueberry milkshake with the straw. A waitress passed by their table, and Subaru grabbed her arm desperately. He didn’t say anything; he just made a strange sound and looked at the kitchen. The girl didn’t get it at first, but then she smiled and nodded before leaving.
“This is not a date, I said,” Subaru repeated, pouting a bit. “And everything’s going smoothly.”
“Okay then,” Yasu answered, looking out the window. He did his best to hide the smile forming on his lips when he thought of the cake Subaru had surely ordered for him.
A couple of minutes after the waitress went again into the kitchen, the lights went off and they could only see the light coming from the street. Subaru jumped from his seat and took a tray from the girl’s hands. It was a two-layered cake, the bottom one covered with blue cream and the top one with white chocolate. Yasu’s name and a big “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” were written with black chocolate syrup. There was also an eito sign and a little blue ranger candy figure next to it.
Yasu clapped his hands and smiled from ear to ear as Subaru placed it on their table. He looked at the two candles, in the shape of a 2 and a 6, in front of him, and made a wish before blowing them out. All the people in the bar clapped their hands and congratulated him as the lights came back. For whatever reason, Subaru was bowing to them in his place.
Subaru ordered two pieces of the cake to be cut and the rest to be put in a box to share it with the other members later. Yasu tried it first, and it was so good. Even though Subaru had his own piece in a plate in front of him, the birthday boy took a bit of his and gave it to him. Before completely pulling the spoon out his mouth, he lifted it a bit so the tip of Subaru’s nose was covered with blue cream.
“What are you doing?” Subaru complained.
Yasu leaned over the table and licked the cream off with his tongue, making Subaru blush and look away.
