Neku/Joshua; "Barking Up the Right Tree"

The constant mocking, the way the other boy's eyes would sweep over him with visible amusement after pretty much everything he said as though his primitive attempts at forming sentences were just so fucking cute, and the way that he did both of these things all the time as though he thought Neku was just incapable of understanding when he was being condescended to -- all of those things helped, no question.

But it was the giggle that finally got to him.

"All right, Neku," Joshua was saying, and his eyes did that slow sweep, flashed to his face. "Let's try actually thinking this one through. The mission was very specific."

Neku argued, slowly and calmly and rationally. He was sure what he was saying made sense -- positive he'd explained it intelligently, and thoughtfully, and thoroughly.

Joshua listened, patient and attentive, but he might as well have been rolling his eyes. The quirk to his lips was every bit as damning.

"Oh, Neku," he said at length, shaking his head with so much affectionate exasperation, and then he giggled.

The slender boy's shoulders made contact with brick wall so fast, so hard, that it knocked the breath out of him. For half a second Neku wasn't even sure how it had happened, only knew that his own hands were on Joshua's upper arms, could distantly feel his fingers digging in to yielding flesh. He was breathing so hard, but when he tried to speak he almost couldn't, his teeth gritted too tightly. Fuck.

He let his head drop forward, recovering.

Joshua said, light and soft, "That hurt."

When Neku lifted his head, curious about that odd tone of voice, he found blue eyes glazed over, pupils blown, lidded and soft and strangely intense all at once. Joshua was breathing thickly, too, his chest heaving with it, and for some reason Neku felt--

He wasn't sure. His mouth was dry, his throat tight. He wet his lips, and the moisture or the contact or the air still passing quickly over them made his whole mouth feel numb.

It was the perfect moment for something to happen.

"Good," Neku finally replied, much too late. "I think I wanted it to."

Joshua's mouth dropped open. He started to say something else, and then seemed to stop himself. His pupils constricted, and then went wide again, as if he were staring directly into a flashlight. The movement was vaguely hypnotic.

Thinly, Neku said, "Take off your clothes."

For once, Joshua didn't respond with more condescension. He was in that other mood, and Neku knew what he was going to say before the words actually came out of his mouth, but that didn't stop the rush of heat from sweeping over him when the blond only murmured, "Yes, sir," and started to undo the buttons on his stiff white shirt.

It was incredibly, viscerally satisfying.

It lasted two seconds.

Then he noticed the smug little smile playing over the other boy's lips and realized he'd been played. Again. Fuck.

"Change of plans," he said, and got his hands in under Joshua's guard to rip his shirt the rest of the way open, sending buttons flying.

The briefly startled look on Joshua's face was utterly worth it, but again it vanished, leaving only interest and that goddamned amusement in its place. "Ooh, Neku," he cooed. "I didn't expect you to be so forceful."

Shut up, Neku thought. "If you don't stop talking," he said out loud, "I swear I'll tie you to a lamp post and just leave you there." He slid one hand lower, over ribs and down to settle on the blond's flat stomach. "And you'll be a lot more naked than this when I do it."
