Madara (
parousian) is insanely difficult to write for. He is such a complicated character that sometimes I really don't know what the hell to do with him. The type of writing that I have to do for him is incredibly dense, very intense, and takes so much brainpower because I am constantly thinking of referentiality, intertexuality, and massive subtext. It is not easy. But it is definitely rewarding. It takes me forever to write just one tag for him, but I think it's worth it.
On the flip side, it's far easier to just write for his alter-ego Tobi.
I'm still incredibly nervous playing him, but I try my best!
My reading of Madara [
Madara's profile]
Madara had watched with rising desperation as the trees grew up all around them, stabbing roots into their warmth, sapping away at all their strength, until all their light had been taken; stolen from eyes that no longer belonged to them, but to the thousand hands that planted down the trees, which jailed them in with solid strength and wood so thick, no amount of flames could burn through their prison. My Madara isn't in any way, shape, or form insane, and never was. Nor was he or is he delusional like just about every other Madara out there. He has about as much insanity as any leader of a clan or village has -- which is to say, not much at all. Like any leader, he harbors (or at least, he did) an enormous amount of passion and love and this tremendous sense of responsibility and accountability for Uchiha.
A lot of people like to portray him like someone psychotic, manical, insane, delusional, and driven into madness, which is what they use to justify his attack on Hashirama, and all the subsequent attacks on Konoha. I definitely do not, in any way, believe that Madara is insane like most of fanon does.
My reading of Madara is that he went up against Hashirama out of too much love for his clan, and had a very deep need to protect them and their honor/pride/dignity, believing and fearing that if he didn't they would fall into ruin and be stigmatized for who they were due to all the years of fighting with Senju. He also believed they would end up oppressed, and in ways, enslaved, either mentally or physically or literally, and that the truce was really just pretty language for taking control of Uchiha and absorbing them into Senju's power -- namely, Konoha.
In my headcanon, Madara articulated those beliefs in his objections to the truce, to Uchiha, and absolutely to Hashirama as to why he did -not- support Hashirama being the one in power. He was jealous, yes, but it wasn't just jealousy, it was also the fact that they were enemies for all those years, and was certain this would result in a downfall/decline of Uchiha if Hashirama called the shots and if power was not also granted to Uchiha. This was not so much about Madara wanting to be Hokage, as it was that he wanted to make sure the balance of power would not be slanted too much to Senju, when they were the ones who offered the truce to begin with, which would, by default, make them the dominant group in power.
So this was more about power, a lack of trust, and having too much love, loyalty, and an overprotective streak for his clan.
Madara's subsequent attack on Konoha with Kyuubi was an attempt to liberate Uchiha from the oppressive power regime Konoha had on them after he recognized just how much subjugation, oppression, and discrimination they had been facing. As a result, he wanted to punish Konoha, and attacked them with Kyuubi. He believed that if he succeeded in wiping out Konoha, or at least by unseating the Hokage from his throne, he would be able to help shift the power balance back to Uchiha, who was controlling the police force, or at least liberate them from Konoha entirely.
It turns out that he certainly wasn't the only person who saw the oppression -- the rest of his clan recognized their marginalization as well, and started to plan the coup d'etat, at which point Itachi approached him.
Madara told Sasuke that he had wanted to start a war, and because he wanted to punish Uchiha, which is why he assisted Itachi. If he truly did want to simply start a war, he could have refused to assist Itachi by allowing the coup d'etat to take place. If it did, it would unseat Konoha's balance of power, which would result the balance of power between the Five Nations to be disrupted, starting the Fourth Great Ninja War. And if he truly wanted to punish Uchiha, he could've done so a countless number of times in the past.
Madara agreed to Itachi's proposal for one reason only: he loved his clan too much and could not bear the thought of them suffering defeat. He knew intrinsically that it would be impossible for Uchiha to overthrow Konoha, knew also, that if they attempted to do so, the uprising would not only be quelled, but they would also be apprehended, tried, and executed under Konoha law. The Uchiha name would be forever marred. All those years, all that pride, everything he had done to build up Uchiha honor -- it would be destroyed. And he could not, just could not, live with the thought that his precious clan, this clan his brother gave his life for, this clan he gave up everything for, would have to suffer imprisonment (enslavement) or be executed by the enemy and have their honor taken away. So in order to protect them from having to suffer such shame, he agreed to help Itachi.
In his eyes, killing them was saving them from a terrible future. It was releasing them from what Konoha planned to do. And he refused, absolutely refused, to allow Konoha to be the ones who would kill his clan or destroy their honor. If they had to die, then he -- and Itachi -- would be the ones who would do it. Together. Of course, he never told Itachi any of this, because he had larger plans for the destruction of Konoha; and Itachi wanted to protect Konoha at all costs, which is why he would sacrifice his family. Madara didn't see them as a sacrifice, instead, he saw his act as an act of liberation, giving them freedom through death.
Scenario
The Dollsyhouse (
thedollsyhouse) is a house filled with horror. Your character literally slips and finds themselves waking up in this enormous house that continues building, somehow, by itself, all day and night. It is impossible to escape the house. And the sense of time there is highly distorted -- day lasts one week, while night lasts two. And during the night, monsters, ghosts, and other phantasms roam the halls. If you get captured by one of these things, horrible things can happen to you.
Synopsis
Madara arrived during Night 008 of the Dollyshouse and encountered Zetsu. So far he's been trying to learn more about the place. As I tag very slowly for him, he hasn't had very much activity at all. He's also run into Sasuke and Itachi. As well as England, from Hetalia.
Logs/Threads
Here are some logs/threads, if you guys would like to read. The way the logs work is, an original post is made, and then all the comments play out the rest of the log. Anything marked with a * is still ongoing. For some logs, I will be posting threads, so make sure you scroll up to read the original post as well to understand the context of the thread. I will try to post everything in chronological order!
"Neither Here Nor There" -- Madara arrives and meets Zetsu Tobi/Madara goes searching for dango and ends up having to make it. While singing loudly.*
Tobi randomly runs into England*
Other Logs/Threads
I've been trying to practice a lot with Madara because I tag so slowly for him and he's just so hard to write for. As a result, I've been playing him a lot in
narudressroom.
Tobi/Madara appears in the Dressing Room. Starts singing "This Is the Song That Never Ends"*
Madara encounters someone he never thought he'd meet again -- Hashirama* This is definitely a thread you want to read/follow, as it's 100% Madara. No deception. No smokescreens. No cryptic bullshit. Pure, unfiltered Madara. Which means it's also currently the most important log for him, because in every other log, he's constantly lying/being cryptic/deceptive. But here, he isn't at all, which is the biggest difference.
