The discussion going on right now on my
epic post is pretty fascinating, but I just do not have time to properly respond to everyone right now. Which kind of makes me feel a little bad, because -- why start a discussion if I don't have time to participate, right? But right now, I just have way too much reading I need to be doing and things that I

But I just want to address one issue here cuz I really cannot, just cannot, get away from this:
My impression is that the majority of your audience in that post are university-educated women.
While this may be the case, there is a difference between being a university-educated woman and a university-educated woman with a specialization in postmodern critical literary and gender theory. Which is very, very different. Looking up all theories referenced on Wiki or Google won't do a good job explaining them at all cuz some of the stuff (like Derrida) is just so convoluted and complicated that it's impossible to just look at a basic explanation and actually understand how the theory works. It's one thing to know what it is; to understand how it is performed is very different, which requires actually reading the work itself, and understanding what the author is saying through the original text.
I think everyone that has been commenting have all been incredibly intelligent and have offered amazing, very valuable insight so far and I've been enjoying reading the conversation even though I haven't been able to participate due to being overwhelmed by a lot of other stuff that I did not expect at all.
Is an academic reading of the text really appropriate for fandom?
For fandom, perhaps not. Because that's not the right audience for it. Which actually is what I tried to avoid doing too much of. However... I think the problem is the way I read is too heavily versed and couched in my understanding of texts as an academic, and that makes it impossible for me to separate the academia from my reading of the text, when I am trying to talk about a text, even in a fannish space... This is still something I am trying to reconcile, and figure out.
Anyway, I'm sorry for what might feel like a response that only addresses two points of this comment, I've been dealing with so much stuff for the past 48 hours and its' just been very, very hectic... I might come back to this later.
I appreciate all the insight you've brought to the discussion.
