utter pointlessness

I need to stop trying to fit Ivalice into some kind of real-world historical context. REPEAT AFTER ME: FFXII IS AN UNHOLY MELD OF CLASSICAL EMPIRES, 18TH CENTURY POLITICS AND 20TH CENTURY MORALITY. Also Dalmasca is not East Central Europe, wtf Subdee. Just because it's your area of interest a contested area full of crazed nationalists plus a ( Read more... )

Never mind real world context, remind me to recount my constructed history of the First People's Commune of Dalmasca. XD

What? Is this before or after the events of the game?

The way I see it FFXII-era Ivalice is like an alternate reality where Rome never fell because the Germans were too busy being Slavs. -_-; You know, settling down to become subsistence farmers in a contested landlocked area devoid of native (non-agricultural) wealth. Except that Dalmasca apparently has magicite. WHY IT'S BEEN ALLOWED TO CONTINUE TO EXIST INDEPENDENTLY, I DON'T KNOW.

The real reason this is totally wrong (aside from there being no Slavs) is that I haven't played the game so I haven't seen the environments, and don't have a clear enough sense of where these various places would go on a map.

!! AWESOME.

Then...

Bjujerba = Singapore
The Wood = Rivendell
Archadia = Persia
Archades = Damascus
Capital of Nabradia = Constantinople
Dalmasca = Morocco
Rabanastre = Rabat
Rozaria = Rome (or at least, Al-Cid is certainly Italian)

Do you think?

I would have said Dalmasca is meant as Turkey, or - heck why not - Syria. XD IIRC they used "Damascene" to refer to the weapons in Vagrant Story, so for ficcing purposes everyone just assumed it was the Middle East. (My best guess is that VS's Valendia is the chunk of the Valendian continent west of Archadia. Landis is most likely around there, come to think of it.)

Other stuff I remembered: magicite is a relatively new source of energy, before that people used electricity. XD Given that the wiring down in Barheim is still in semi-working order I'd say the age of magicite and airships has been ongoing for little more than a century. The Sandseas are filled with these abandoned Rozarrian oil rigs. (It's made very clear that oil rigs are what they are, which has got to be a first for a fantasy RPG. XD)

Abandoned oil rigs. Right. sub_divided January 27 2007, 06:33:06 UTC
...I give up. XD clearly it doesn't matter. Ancient ruins in the shape of the Michelin Man! Why not.

I should play Vagrant Story. XD come to that, I should play FFXII too.
